Top Gear NBC pilot
I really cannot see how this will do anything other than suck.
What happens the first time that they dare to criticize a sponsors product ?
What happens when a 'star in a reasonably priced car' (which I presume will have to be an automatic) breaks a nail and sues them ?
Talking of which, how is the general public going to understand that 'Top Gear' refers not to 'impressive hardware', but actually to 5th or 6th GEAR in a gearbox and is/was a reference to driving quickly
Simply they will not allowed to be objective for fear of losing advertising revenue, so the whole show will be one long suck-up to the advertisers.
As for the 'actors' playing 'parts', the TG team are scarily similar to the way that they appear, they are not actors, they are three car-nuts that behave like delinquent school boys......

I agree with though of a good one. Even though Jeremy doesn't "act" like much of a gear head, he's owned many many cars and knows a lot about a lot of different cars. watch some of the older episodes, like when Jeremy first appeared on the scene (as far as top gear goes). he's just like everyone else though, he has his own opinions, just he has an advantage 'cause he can show/tell his on the air...lol.
I don't think it will work here in the US. In the segment where they have some celeb interview and then have them race around a track for the best time won't even happen. U.S. celebs are so whacked out on green right now that they won't be "allowed" to have fun. To them, cars are greenhouse gas belching demons and not to be looked at for fun. As much as I would like to see a U.S. show like this, I just think it will fail with the current "green" frenzy and high fuel costs.

And it will not be as good as the original, just like everything else, with the noteable exception of Godfather 2.

What basically amounts to an unbiased consumer review show simply cannot exist on commercial television. Just imagine they test a truly awful GM product, does anybody seriously think they'll be allowed to say what they really think on the show? No, don't be daft, GM would never give NBC another advertising dollar ever again. It's the capitalism people, get used to it.
how abt the cars? US have so few brands to choose from compared to europe...
US dun have alfa romeo, peuqgot, opel....etc
they will be driving the brand over and over agina except that its different models

There's nothing that says they have to limit themselves to US cars. Anything that can be legally imported and licensed should be fair game.
So we may not see any Peugots or Fiats or Seats, but I would expect to see lots of Lambos, and Astons, and VW's, as well as all the Asian marks. And of course we'd see Saleen and Lingenfelter limited production cars made here in the US of A.

The 'rednecks' where/are actors for instance.
Sadly (and this is coming from a Brit), the perception of the American public by those across the pond, is pretty much as it was portrayed in that show.
That is how most of the rest of the world see the American people.
You realize that it was a fairly immensely staged episode ?

yeah I know... both about the show and about the perception of Americans. Mostly warranted but it was a painful episode to watch. I'm one of those Americans who wouldn't mind moving overseas - I've lived in Europe (Czech Republic) and would be happy learning a new language and changing my lifestyle.
As much as I like Top Gear and as much as I agree it is probably the best car show out there, I also find that some of the "antics" are too dumb/random/irrelevant for me to watch....and I frequently turn it off. Perhaps a U.S. show can dial in the formula a bit better, but I suspect they'll be tempted to just blindly mimic the other objectively successful show.
The U.S. does have claim to NPR's "Car Talk," and while the show is vastly different from Top Gear, it is constructed (or has evolved) to perfectly suit to the personalities that host the show and so it comes off very well. The same is true of Top Gear...the hosts just seem to effortlessly make the show work. I hope a U.S. version can find it's own "soul" just as effortlessly w/o being too hemmed-in to one restrictive formula.

Hammond LOVES old muscle cars.
No NBC rip-off show... I'll continue to watch the real thing thanks
