My 1970 Bug is finished!
My 1970 Bug is finished!
Well it is finally done (except a few small things)...after 4 years...
This is my first car i ever owned in my own name. I bought it when i was 17 for $2,300. It is a 1970 VW Bug. It has been completely restored/customized from the ground up. Although the engine has duel carbs, cam, and has been bored to 90.5mm pistons with CNCed heads, and larger valves, it is a show car and will not be raced.
The interior is all tweed, including headliner, carpet, door panels and seats.
The exterior is all steel except the rear fenders which are fiberglass and 3 inches wider than stock, the running boards, and the interior dash are also fiberglass.
the mod list on this car is waaay to much to type out, so i will just post some pictures.
Hopefully Hot VW magizine, or Ultra VW will have this car as a feature one day.

A few things left that need to be done are painting the brake hubs, ceramic coating the exhaust under the rear apron, and get some finger guards for the inside door latch.
anyways i hope you like it!

Very nice
I started a VW Bug restoration a few years ago... gave up because it required too much work (completely rusted out floorpans, heater channels, bad engine, etc...) Gave away the rust bucket so I could park the MCC in the garage.
Great job! You should be proud! the rear tail lites are a nice touch.

Here is a small short video clip of the car idling in the drive way. The sound isnt all that great because the clip was takin with a small camera phone. The exhaust seems to make the micriphone crack a bit from the deep exhaust tone. The cam lope sounds really nice to me, makes the car sound like it really has some muscle too it.
Anyways you might have to mess with your speaker volume a bit to really get a good listen. The speakers start crackling towards the start of the clip but at the end it sounds really nice if you turn the volume up.

Really sweet Bug!
My brother had one that was modified for years, once we did an autocross and I rode shotgun.
The older headlights look much better than the "newer" ones.
Thanks for sharing.

Most of the work that was done to the car was far beyond my skills, (especially because i dont know how to do body work) for example the first 2 feet of the front nose has been cut off and has had a pre-66 front end welded back on in order for the longer more narrower hood. Also the front suspension has been narrowed 2' inches in order to fit 7 inch wide rims under the front fenders. The fiberglass dash has been molded in to look almost stock. The Car has electric windows...all sorts of stuff that takes alot of time and skill.
With me working full time and limited garage space there is no way i could get this done by myself.
Alot of the work was done by a VW shop in GA. called GVP tuning. I have a friend who works there who does all the body work/paint. They are the ones who assymbled most of the car.
I was basicaly the designer, i picked out the parts, materials, colors and so on. (My dad helped with the funds)
The car is currently in Florida at my old home, i had to move to Las Vegas before the car was completed, and at the moment i have no place to keep the car safe. So the car will be staying in florida until i can get a place with a garage out here.
Here are some more pics of the engine. Also the amp and 10' inch sub behind the rear seat. the area behind the rear seat is pretty plain, but it is a very small space that you would normally never see.

where in florida?
Just curious as i live in florida and have a slight affinity towards beetles (what can i say i grew up watching The Love Bug)
BTW, the car is looking great, what was the shape of it when you first got it, or have any before pictures to compare to the gorgeous after ones

I will have to dig around for the cars orginal pics when i first got it at 17. It was not very pretty.
But here are a few shots of the car in its early stages of being built. (I will post pics of the car before it started its transformation soon)

This is the Front suspension beam being narrowed 2 inches.

I think most of the earlier stages of the restoration are all actual photo's so i will have to scan them so i can post them up. Oh, my old home is in Jacksonville FL.

Ok i found a few more pics, one of them is the car when i first bought it (the picture was not taken at my house) Im still digging for more pics of the early stages of restoration. But here is what i got for now.

The cars orginal condition was decent, we found it had been painted about 7 times. So the multi layers of paint helped alot against rust. There was still quite a bit of rust once the car was stripped down. Both floor pans were replaced and the heater boxes under the rear seat were removed and closed. Also the tiny rims/tires that were on the car (that came with the car when i bought it) caused the car to run very high RPM's at highway speeds.
But anyways i will try to find more pics of the early stuff.

Very cool Mizer!! I really love looking through before/after pics of a resto. I'm assuming they welded the new pans on?? Any shots before the carpeting went in? That shade of green is very unique. What is it called?? Sorry for all of the questions
it's such a great looking Bug

Thanks Mizer for the pics! They tell the real story. Body off pan? Sweet! We were going to do that as well. But the rust was too much and I didn't want to put so much $$ into it. Especially after getting the MINI.
I've never actually seen pics of a nose job... on a Bug anyways
Thanks again!! Great work by the shop you chose
