The MINI photos in your signature don't show the license plate. I recall (when we met at U Santa Clara) you had one of the nifty "display" type license plate installations that you did yourself, but I don't remember how you did it. Do you mind a brief step by step? I still haven't had the nerve to drill holes in my front bumper and the plate is too reflective to display on the dash while I am driving. Thanks.

I then welded a 5/8" threaded rod onto the tow hook thread (at a slight angle) because the tow hook is at an inward angle when completely threaded in. Now I had a part that would thread into the car’s tow hook hole and one that I could adapt to a frame.
I then made a frame out of some bar stock steel and welded a bolt on to it that the modified tow hook threaded rod would thread into. I drilled holes in the frame that the license plate and nifty brushed steel frame cover would attach to. I used a second bolt on the threaded rod so I could adjust the license plate to be straight while also getting it nice and tight. It has been on the car for several months now and remains tight and straight.
This enables me to take it off if I wish, like for a car show and not have holes in the front bumper. I like the fact that it is not centered so does not impede air flow and can be taken off in a few seconds if needed.
It may seem like a bit of work to do but as you know us MINI folks are very fanatic about our babies. Besides it was a fun winter project and if I’m not driving my MINI the next best thing to do is to be tinkering with it. For someone who has access to a welder and come cutting and grinding tools it was not really hard to do.
The entire project cost me around $30.00 for the stainless steel frame cover, tow hook, steel bar stock and nuts and bolts.
If you want to get tow hook to use to make this Classic MINI has then for around $15.00. The part number is- 72150141166
I haven’t taken any pictures yet but here is a link that shows what it would look like:

I think the thread pattern of the tow hook is English or German or something not common here in NA.

Steve: Thanks for this information. I had forgotten the name of the thread and just realized I could look it up by going through my old posts--nifty set-up, NAM. The process is a bit complicated for me (I don't even have a garage), but I might find a shop willing to take it on. The result looked great on your car. Best wishes. Robin
