Tour du Nord IV: Newfoundland
Tour du Nord IV: Newfoundland
Care to join the fourth annual mid-winter trek to Canada?
2005 - Hudson Bay
2006 - Newfoundland (round 1)
2007 - Labrador
2008 - Newfoundland (round 2)
The Hudson Bay trip took us as far north on a paved road as you can drive in eastern North America. The Labrador trip took us as far east as you can drive on mainland North America.
The 2006 trip to Saint John's NL was shortened because a blizzard delayed the ferry crossing from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland. Undaunted by the (unlikely) potential 100 mph winds and 35' seas, we'll make it to St. John's in 2008 come Hell or High Water!
Our goal is to drive to the easternmost point on North America. Saint John's is the oldest city in Canada, has the oldest street and the most pubs per square foot in Canada.
Other claims to fame include hosting the first transatlantic flight

and being the first to have wireless communication in the world (not the kind you're thinking of):

Ah jeez... I've been wanting to head up there in a car, but that would take a significant amount of time. Newfoundland and labrador anyway, I mean we'd have to catch a boat, yeah? One of these days...
Newfoundland, big honking ferry used (holds 80 tractor trailer units if no MINIs were on board)!
But, as we found out 2 years ago, a blizzard with 100 mph winds and 35 foot seas are enough to prevent the ferry from docking in Newfoundland . . .
