Rugged Hard Case for Garmin Nuvi Series

If I can drop something, I will, so when I got my Garmin Nuvi 660 GPS, I wanted a tough case for it as well.

I selected the Pelican "Micro Case" 1020. (link here). The case already came with a liner, but I ordered the "Pick 'N Pluck" foam insert as well.

Setting up the PNP foam insert was easy - I just removed *all* of the pre-scored foam blocks, leaving just the ring around the outside, which I glued into the liner with some black weatherstripping adhesive. This fit the Garmin Nuvi 660 perfectly. To use this case with the smaller Nuvi 350/360 series, you just wouldn't remove as much foam from the left and right sides of the insert. The height and depth of the 660 and 350 are the same - they only vary in width.

The Pelican Micro cases are airtight, watertight, crushproof, and even have a built-in pressure purge valve. The catches are rugged and easy to open/close. They're even available in a variety of colours! Total shipped cost was about $25 for the case, the included liner and the foam insert.

Here are some pictures:

When I'm autocrossing, I take it out of my car when I get to the course, and this gives me someplace solid to store it. I also use it on my motorcycle, but don't have a good place on the bike to stash it when I get where I'm going. I sometimes carry it around as an MP3 player when I don't want to take along my iPod.

I realize this might be overkill for a lot of people, but there was an active thread here on NAM a few weeks ago where people were looking for Nuvi hard cases, and I thought this was another alternative to the Nintendo DS case or similar semi-rigid cases.

That's a great idea for storing the Nuvi. As for why you would want to do this. I don't leave my unit in the car and the size and battery feature on the Nuvi also makes it a great cary around GPS when on foot.
