Replacing radio without losing Nav System

Hey All -

I have the factory navigation system in my MINI and I love it. Recently I've been looking at a DVD player/iPod interface for my MINI, and I really like this one: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-NcEDdEX...5&g=168550#Tab

My question: the crutchfield webpage says the navigation system will be lost if I replace the factory radio. Is this true, and if so, is there a workaround? I don't understand why a new radio would cause that to be lost if the connections are the same...

Thanks!

I suspect they mean the AUDIO from your Navigation system would be lost. The reason? The new radio doesn't have an input specifically designed to receive the audio from your Nav system. Your Nav would probably still work fine, but it would just be silent. If you're like me, and you often turn off the audio directions and rely mostly on the easy-to-read directions on-screen, it may not be a huge loss.

Yeah, I suspect that's what they mean too. Everyone has their preferences I guess, but I really like the audio on my nav system. I wonder, would it possible to modify it in some way to keep this feature with the new radio?

getting ready to change my stereo on my 2002 MCS with Nav and read that on Crutchfield. I took that as meaning the audio as well, but have not spoke to anyone to actually confirm this.

I am planning on changing out in the next week or so, I have never used the audio on the nav so I dont think I will miss it.

you'll no longer hear the woman's voice giving you directions and also lose the radio controls if you have a mfsw.

when installing the AUX in, you've got to combine the pins on the extra plug for the radio. the NAV system uses two positions and the AUX two more. If your new radio has an AUX input, you could certainly configure these two wires to provide that input. The trick is to get it mute the normal audio like the stock radio does, to provide the voiceover. If your new radio has a 'phone mute' trigger, I suspect any competent audio installer could make this work for you. Good luck and let us know what you find out!
