Aux input wonkiness question...
Hello All,
I know this topic has been discussed here in many different threads, but I could not find the answer to a few of the questions to follow.
-Firstly, as has been discussed on other threads, I am having a problem with my aux input. I have no trouble at all with my ipod hooked in (without charger). But when I hook up my Sirius portable (powered by cig lighter), it work fine sometimes, and other times it will start for about 3 seconds and dump to my CD player, and not allow me to go back into aux mode unless I unplug the mini cable from the Sirius.
-I have read in other threads that the ground loop isolator is the way to go, but I have this question first.....
If I hardwire the Sirius to come on without the cig lighter power, will that solve the problem? Or is that not part of what is causing this problem.
I went to a couple of places yesterday to look for the GLO, but they did not have mini-mini plugs, only RCA's, so I would have to buy adaptors, upon adaptors, and before I do all that, I want to see if the hardwired power will work.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Hmm.
I too use an iPod, and more recently my Sirius StarMate receiver through my dealer-installed Aux port. I've never had any of the symptoms you're describing.
What kind of cable are you using to connect the Sirius receiver to the aux port? Is it "beefy" enough? I use one from Monster Cable, and again, haven't had any issues.
I wonder if the problem could be as simple as that cable? (Probably not).
I wish you good luck in finding the solution. Let us know how it turns out.

I purchased the mini plug version of the gound isolater from Crutchfield. Two days later I had it, tried it and the problem went away, never to return. I think that this cars electrical system detects the connected devices search for ground and will then 'cut' the connection to avoid interference/fire/mayhem. Too smart for me for sure.
The ground loop isolater is the way to go.
The HU seems to register the AUX input from 2 things
1. A completed circuit (i.e. something is plugged in)
2. The completed circuit falls within a certain frequency range.
My hypothesis (read: I'm too lazy to go out with my multi-meter and check) is that since the HU and the cig lighter use the same ground point, the frame of the car, you get added noise that falls outside of the frequency range that the HU uses to "activate" the AUX input. I believe, like Merkursport suggested, it is a system to prevent damage.
What's odd is that if you are using the OEM AUX input, I thought they came with the GLI built in... maybe I'm wrong. The only reason I needed the GLI was because I built the AUX input myself.

Here's the Crutchfield
