Stock System (Non HK) Adding an amp?

I have a stock non HK stereo in my '05 MCS and I read everywhere that adding an amp will make a difference as the the HU is under powered. I would change the speakers too and a add a sub but the only way I would do it is if you cant tell anything was done, so that limits the locations for a sub... anyways off topic. I read on here that some people have fitted the amp in the rear cubby holes, that being said what amps fit? and also what wiring mods would have to be done?

Ive searched around quite a bit so if I missed something just post me the link. Thanks.

I heard one system where the owner kept his oem, non-hk radio an added the Alpine F 240 40wpc rms amp. He put it in the cubby under the front seat, and had no noise interference or heat problems at all. Although he did replace the front speakers with the less expensive Polks. All in all it sounded pretty good.
