cafemoc,

Would you mind sharing the details of your mounting arrangement? Is it homebuilt or purchased?

I am using Navman mounting bracket came with GPS. It has large suction cup at the end, so I use round shape glass larger than suction cup, and use Velcro to mount to dash, then attach mounting bracket. It is very secure, but only problem I am having is GPS(cigarette cable) is on Wiper arm, so if I need to use wiper, I have to disconnect battery cable.
I use aux adaptor for voice navigation, share with my MP3 player with Y adaptor got from Radiochack, and both work out pretty good. When voice alert kicks in, it disables music, so you can hear voice alert nice and clear.
Also GPS is close to wheel, so I can even use touch screen while I am at traffic light without reaching over to GPS .

So you can plug the GPS into the AUX cable and the voice commands come out over speakers? That's niccceee!

Forget all of them with a screen and buttons...

Nah, get the Vcommand. No maps, no buttons. It's all voice recognition.
After about a week of getting used to it you will use nothing else.
It's like having your personal back-seat driver.

If this is what you're talking about, it does look pretty slick:

I wouldn't exactly call it portable though. The ability to easily move it from vehicle to vehicle is something many of us want. Not to mention, the option to then take it with you outside the car once gets the desitnation, like for a hike, or walking the maze of streets in an area such as SF...

Here's what I've chosen: https://www.magellangps.com/en/produ...asp?PRODID=955 This is the system that the Hertz Neverlost is based around. My brother works for Thales Navigation, in another division and has one of these. It's a fantastic unit. It will be portable and travel with me in other cars. It's small enough to fit in the space just above the useless cup holders. I don't mind it being down there, as the voice command is the most important thing, more so than the map. Even though I will have to look down a bit to see the map, that's not a probkem. If I REALLY need the map, I can move it to the glass with a suction cup.
