iPod adapter installed...no instructions.
I have the adapter installed and I have the iPod mini. Now, with out the multifunction steering wheel, how do I access all this music? Oh, the iPod was given to me with 800 songs on it. I cannot determine how to get to the songs I want to play.
I have a Harmon-Kardon system too - 05 car.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...I'm a computer moron too
Ciao,
Michael

I'm pretty sure that with the official MINI IPod adapter, you need to set up 5 playlists to be able to access the music. You can do this through the iTunes software. I'm not sure if they have to be named a certain way, I think I remember reading that they do, something like BMW1, BMW2, etc. I'm sure someone else who has the MINI adapter will be able to help you better. I have the IceLink Plus, and that also uses playlists, but you aren't limited to just the 5 playlists, you can also use the iPod to access songs by Artist, style, etc.

You may be out of luck, at least with the existing 800 songs. If someone gave you an IPOD with 800 songs on it, and you don't have iTunes with the same songs loaded on the computer:
1) There's no way to copy the songs from the iPod back into iTunes - the iPod is a one-way device in that regard. iTunes can copy music to the iPod, but you can't suck music off the iPod with it (other than deleting things you don't want)
2) I'm not sure, but I also don't think you can create new playlists on the iPod in your situation, unless you have the music loaded on the PC. I could be wrong here, because I've never tried it....
3) Like MCJoe said, I *think* you need to have specific playlists set up to work with the MINI iPod adapter. If I recall from other posts, in the MINI version the playlists are MINI1, MINI2, etc.

It can be done!
There actually are apps out there that will copy your songs from the ipod to itunes. Do a search at www.macupdate.com and also here http://www.ipodhacks.com/ i've never used any of these apps myself but they are out there.
Once that is done and your songs are in your iTunes app, then you'll need to make 5 playlists: MINI1, MINI2, etc. You don't have to use all 5, but why not?
Also, idealy, even without any MINIx playlists, if you select "CD 6" on your hu it should play all the songs on the iPod regardless of what playlist they're in.

I knew there was probably a way to play all the songs...
To play devils advocate, assuming you were able to use one of the utilities to move the songs back to the PC into iTunes, wouldn't the DRM effectively keep you from using those files (assuming they're .m4a files from iTunes to start with) ?
I guess if they're standard .mp3 files it wouldn't matter -

As for holding on to the existing songs, I really don't know, but there is probably a secondary app which cn help. As for accessing them, I believe that you can do so by punching the 6 button; this connects you to the last playlist (MINI6), which is essentially "All" (All of the songs on the iPod).
