Navigation & AudioAudio upgrades, bluetooth, and navigation discussions surrounding the Clubman (R55), Cooper and Cooper S (R56), and Cabrio (R57) MINIs.
I've read through a couple of posts here (including the particularly long post started in 2020 about Android options) and there seems to have been a consensus that there was/is no option for an aftermarket replacement head unit for cars equipped with the factory navigation option. I did some searching around today and have found something interesting on eBay. It's a head unit that purports to work with cars equipped with the factory nav/screen.
The Amazon listing has a positive review, and the seller (Kunfine) seems responsive to questions.
I think both of these listings suggest that the unit will only display Kmh, but my take after reading the posts on NAM is that it IS possible to get a system to display Mph, but you have to load a different software.
I was wondering if anyone has an idea of how to confirm if this type of head unit will indeed work in a car with nav.
Is there an Android aftermarket head unit "authority" that would offer insight? "Android Factory" does not seem to be active on eBay any longer.
Update: It looks like the manufacturer might be VIKNAV. I found a few listings for this head unit on Alibaba/Aliexpress. There is a viknav.com that shows an item for the R60 and down in the detail they mention the R56. I may send out a few emails/contacts to see what comes back...
I just installed a Viknav head unit in my 2012 R60 (non-nav). The system works great and the install was super simple. The only issue I had was the back-up camera. The power from the reverse light fluctuated too much so I had to install a relay to get power from the aux power connector.
I didn't see any options to disable or dim but I will have a look tomorrow. I don't think you will even notice it after you've had it for a few days. I think you could load a different car launcher and get mph that way.
I agree that a different software would offer MPH, but I thought it looked to me like the KPH readout was a sort of fixed LED array, maybe even such that the kph lettering was permanent?
I went through all of the settings in the android unit but couldn't find anyway to change the speedo to MPH. The speedometer actually lights up before the android system itself. Speedo, instrument lights, fuel gauge, etc turn on as soon as the car is started while the android system takes a few seconds to boot up. Here are a few pics of the system.
