Volume control issue

Hey everyone,
New to the site and I'm having an issue with my 2011 Countryman S

It's the standard stereo and I haven't made any upgrades. I was driving on the freeway today (long trip) and noticed that the volume would all of the sudden cut out. It would still be playing music just very low volume. Turning the **** and using the steering wheel controls wouldn't turn up the volume. It was to the point that I couldn't hear it with the windows down and with the windows up it was still hard to hear.

Just hoping someone has encountered this before and has some solutions.

Thank you in advance.
Andrew

Odd, sounds like something shorted out in the radio. Has it happened again since then? You should post this in the R60 Countryman section. I used to be a Service Advisor at MINI but now I'm in sales for BMW. The only time I saw something like this was on an R56 and the head unit itself died but it made no sound at all, no gong or anything. Do you still have the door gong and start up gongs?

Yes I was made aware of the fact to post there..oops. It hasn't. I made about an 8hour round trip today. And on the first half (when it had the issues) I had the Windows down and the heat on full blast. On the way back I didn't use the heat and it didn't have any problems...I'm thinking maybe the head unit overheated and that's what caused the issue..I thought I had read somewhere about there being some kind of safety feature so it won't fry the head unit..something to keep an eye on I guess

Yeah they have a thermal overload sensor in them so they shut off if they get too hot. Make sure the top vents on your dash aren't blocked by anything, they vent upwards. Hopefully it was just a weird one time thing.
