iPod Touch 5th gen advice

I just lost my old 2nd generation iTouch and had to buy a new 5th generation version. Has anyone tried using the new 5th generation iTouch with their MINIs (especially those with MINIs newer than 2011)? Have you experienced any problems using it with your MINI (especially if you use the 30-pin adapter or the factory supplied Y-cable)? I keep hearing conflicting information regarding whether or not the new iTouch works with the MINI now (whether you use the 30-pin adapter or use the USB port). I also hear conflicting information regarding whether it will or will not charge when connected. I hear some owners see their music is playing, but no sound comes through the speakers or they don't see the tracks on the stereo. Basically, is there something I need to do to make this new iTouch work with my 2013 MINI or with the adapter can I just plug and play as usual (HK sound system)? Thanks in advance for your advice!
