Problems with remote amp lead in trunk

Hey everyone!

I am connecting an aftermarket amp in the trunk of my R56 Coupe and I have drawn the 12v from the battery and the ground to a bolt in the trunk, but I can't get the remote lead to work. I am trying to patch in to the cigarette lighter leads that are already in the trunk without cutting any wires. I just loosened the plug that is on the lighter housing and attached two spade connectors to my remote lead wires and put them into the connector like the photo shows. But whichever way I plug the cables in, the fuse in the car blows. I plug the + to the Remote in connector on the amp and the - to the ground connector on the amp.

What do I need to do to make this work? Is it just not possible to get the remote from here? When I measure the power it shows around 14.4v. Or do I need to connect before the plug, and if so, which cable is the ground and which is the +?

I have searched through this forum as well as NAM and I can't find any info on this specific matter... Please help me out as this is the last step to my complete upgrade to the sound system in my car.

You dont need to tap the negative for remote turn on, just positive. I used the same trigger wire detailed in the integral audio install pdf for their subwoofer system, available on their website. The connection is in the driver side kick panel, tapping one wire then bringing it back to the rear. This works perfectly.

yesti: Yeah ok, that's what I thought at first but couldn't get to work either so I tried it with ground also. I really don't want to rip the car apart again just to get the remote lead done since I thought I could use this one. I've read about other people using it and getting it to work but nothing I do seems to get it working...

Maybe I just need to bite the bullet and pull everything apart and connect that lead that you are talking about. Could it be that my amp needs a specific signal that the lighter wire doesn't send? Wrong voltage or something?

I'd think the lighter should work as it is switched. I had the kick panel open to tap the speakers anyway so it was easy to get remote while in there. I haven't searched for using the cig lighter but I know there are many post regarding installing amps.

First, your amp needs to be connected to a common ground, you'll find a bolt inside the kick panel next to the seat. Use 8 gauge or better.

Once your ground is established, then tap the remote turn on to the cig lighter positive.

Thanks, my problem has been solved. Turned out the amp was faulty, tried with another one and it worked perfectly.

Did you also ground the amp to a common ground point rather than the rear lighter??

Yup. Had a bit of a brain melt when I didn't get it working at first, I know I don't have to run a separate ground for the remote on... The common ground to the amp is enough. It was just that I have never had to use anything other than a regular remote lead from a stereo before so I got unsure of myself.

I did the same, by tapping into the rear lighter power.
