Bluetooth Quality
I have a R58 Coupe and I was wondering if I have a car related bluetooth issue. My phone pairs fine but I have heard from more than a few people that when I'm in the car I sound like I'm either underwater or buried in a tunnel.
Has anyone else experienced this? I don't see how that would be my phone, it would seem it has to do with the car end of it.
Any thoughts?

If you search Bluetooth quality in the r58 section there is talk about it. Every time I goto dealer I ask if they have a fix for it but there is none as of now. Mine is so bad I never use it which sucks because I believe I paid a lot of money for this option.

heres one thought, on the bt for my r56, my droid incredible apparently had a horrid blue tooth connection, because i changed phones to a galaxy s3, and it was immediately better (according to those i called) So perhaps try pairing a different phone as a test perhaps, see if its any different to declare the problem with the car..
Or it could just suck in the 58 and i don't know what i talking about.

It's the car, we have an R56 (not bad), had an R57 (terrible), and now own an R58 same as the R57 in the steering column, and that is just as bad, well a tiny bit better then the R57 due to the quiter interior. But still pretty brutal to be on the other side trying o listen.
I cringe when the wife calls me from the car.

I have had Mini replace the microphone several times. I always have the service manager drive with me when they "fix it" and then give it back to repair. Short of it is that they did a terrible job with the Blue Tooth.
Suggestions:
1. close air vent if you have a convertible
2. scream not talk
3. ? replace BlueTooth module?

Unfortunately, in the Coupé they hid the mic behind a grill mounted on the right side of the steering column where it meets the dash... so no real moving that.
Blue Tooth Microphone problems
Here's what I've tried in order from simplest to most difficult:
1. delete paired Blue Tooth from both car and your phone
2. close all air vents near the microphone (especially r57 convertible)
3. shut off the WIFI (read a thread that suggested that it may impair your Blue Tooth)
4. retrofit a cone/cup such that it creates a focal point around the microphone toward you (like a satellite dish pointing at you)
5. move microphone closer to you (I have little success with this)
6. replace microphone from Mini (no change in sound when I did this); I even rewired an aftermarket microphone (but I assume the MINI microphone is amplified -- so that didn't work since mine was a straight microphone).
7. change the Blue Tooth module (pray that it's under warranty); ensure that firmware of module is up to date to work with your phone.
8. record all complaints and demand money back from Mini Corporate ; I've read of a few people doing this and switching to a Parrot system
Last point: check this spreadsheet to see if there's any issues with pairing with your phone:
