Rare stock audio setup

Found this the other day while browsing MINIs on autotrader.com. I just like to look while I have a free moment:

See what's different? Might take you a moment like it took me. I had heard of this option but didn't know if any stateside MINIs were shipped with one of these. I hope the new owner leaves it in place- it's a rarity for sure!

Interesting this just came up. I recently just purchased a 05 MCS w/ the cassette player, hk system and iPod set up in lieu of the factory 6 disk. Not doing my homework, I figured tape player was a standard option. In doing some research it appears the tape player model headunit (wave) is common in Europe and is not fully capatible with iPod the factory integration. For lack of a better term, the iPod integration system works when I plug my iPhone in on the bottom, but the factory aux in (option to plug it into the headphone port) does not, which I would like it to.

Anyone know if I can swap this model headunit to a newer CD (boost) headunit? Will the swap affect the steering wheel controls and be compatible with the factory hk system?

Yes, you can swap out a CD head unit with no detrimental effects.

I actually purchased one of these for old times sake - I've got an ipod set up via the cd changer (Intravee II) so I never use the CD slot.

According to realoem.com, they even offered a BoostMD (MiniDisc) unit. That's probably even rarer, although the MD format was big in Japan for a while.
