Longer Iphone cable or extension?

The factory Iphone cable is pretty short. I tried plugging in my computers USP to Iphone connector but the system says unrecognized device. How have others solved the problem of having a longer cable from the USB to the iphone?

I used extension cables, a USB one and an Audio one. Then I soldered the extensions into the adapter to produce a longer integrated cable.
