Need help with sd/usb interface

Anyone got an idea why this connects2 usb interface will not work, I have connected as I think it should be with the supplied 16 flat pin harness.
First I removed the mp3 cd changer in the boot then the radio, fitted the connects2 unit in the glovebox and connected it to the flying lead that comes off the back of the new supplied multiplug, then connected the new harness to the radio then to the car radio harness (pic 1).

I then switched on the radio and went through the modes but it would only switch from radio to cd & back, I thought it would see the connects2 unit as the cd changer but nothing happened, I also refitted the cd changer in the boot, but the connects2 still didn't burst into life.

I have 2 of these units fitted to our Renault cars one a laguna and one clio, very easy to fit, just pulled out the cd changer plug out of the back of Renault radio and popped in the connects2 plug they worked first time no probs, so I was using the sd card out of the laguna which I know works, in the connects2 unit in the mini.

As for the instructions I got with the unit very poor, poss wrong as they mention VW Skoda Audi
The thing I'm not sure about is the harness, the car harness has got the 16 pin plug top right a small white plug bottom right is not used on the new harness as there is a blue plug in its place (see pic), then there is a small black plug on the bottom left on the car harness, which is not used on the new harness, so I'm thinking should I be unclipping this black plug and fitting it into the new harness in the plastic shroud at the rear of radio, just not sure if I would do any damage by doing this, the instructions dont mention this.
Oh and I did ask before I bought the unit if it would need to be programmed in by BMW and was told no its plug & play.
The only thing I have not done is to disconnect the battery to see if it would see the unit when the battery was reconnected.
The car is a 2006 copper s with HK upgrade nav & bluetooth.
