Much better than getting a Car Audio head unit

Just need to find out if they make a Single-Din version
I saw the Scosche kit. But it isn't for sale on their website, and I haven't a CLUE where to find it... and where would you put a 1DIN version anyway? The Mini head unit isn't compatible with any aftermarket mounts. There is no 1DIN space on the dash...

As for the Prokit: I was recommended the following setup by their customer service:

$29,99 car mount
$39,99 iPad holder
$12,99 Block spacer

Bit cheaper than the one you're referencing.

My car is the R50. "It" has ONE single-din (and they are coming out with the single din version I just found out today)

and you are Right. "It" might be cheaper than the upcoming Scosche Kit. But Where will you plug the iPad Audio into? Does your Head Unit have a 3.5mm Headphone Jack Input? or Apple Digital Connector (iPod, iPhone, iPad)?

Ahh you have an R50... you're lucky to have a 1DIN then

Update from my side. I got the ProClip kit that I was talking about. Sadly... the tilt/swivel hinge is the same thing; so if you want a rotation capability, the hinge has to be relatively loose; which, in turn, means that any speed bump and your iPad will face downwards because of weight. I emailed ProClip, let's see what they come back with.

Other thing: I have iPod integration in the car. My iPhone 4 works fine; it complains that the accessory is not "optimized" for the iPhone, but it works fine to play music nevertheless. The iPad..... is a whole other story. If I plug it in, it goes absolutely HAYWIRE telling me the accessory is incompatible, and even if you click Dismiss, it still pops up again. Very bad. I wasn't planning on using the headphone in... not because of quality or anything (since the iPod integration kit still uses AUX IN) but just because of wiring mess.

Of course, it doesn't charge either (insufficient current). Dammit.

[edit] hohoho... I just realised I'm in the 1st gen Mini forum. I am clearly not just unlucky with my install, but retarded as well meh there are no thread search results in the 2nd gen forum so I'm staying put.

iPad 2 Setup R56

I have a really good plan for my ipad mount and I just ordered the parts. Its not for everybody, because I plan to mount the ipad right over my speedometer. I did something like this (though without this mount etc.) with my ipad 1 before I sold it and upgraded, and it worked amazing. Granted mounting the ipad right over the speedometer takes away from your viewing the speedometer, but I use the digital display on my tachometer to see my speed. It also may cover some of my radio controls (not sure yet) but when I am using the mount, I will be playing music off of it.

It should be perfect for me and very inexpensive.

I am going to get the following, but without the arm in between the mount and the suction cup.

http://www.ram-mount.com/Portals/0/S...b166ap8iu2.jpg

The suction cup piece:

http://www.google.com/products/catal...641167650696#p

will connect directly to ipad mount:

http://www.ram-mount.com/Portals/0/S...mholap8iu6.jpg

Then I will mount it right over the speedometer:

http://cdn-www.rsportscars.com/image...meter_w800.jpg

I think the suction cup will hold nicely to the plexy of the speedometer.

Thats my plan. I ordered the parts: the RAM ipad 2 mount (or for ipad 1 - they are the same actually but be sure to specify) and the suction cup back piece (RAP--224-1U) from GPS Zone (1-800-354-6193) and the guy was super nice. I got the whole package for $30 shipped!

I will try and post pics once I receive it.

Interesting. I have been running the Proclip ipad 1 mount in my R56, and it's been a hit and miss - it sits fine, but it pretty much blocks the passenger if you sit a big person in the seat. Multiple times people have kicked the mount with their knees, so it is suboptimal.

I am very interested to hear how your mount works out - I am planning on picking up an iPad 2 and I figure the Proclip won't fit it anyway so I would probably need a new mount anyway - want to hear how yours works out. Please post pics and, more importantly, durability!

I'm looking forward to hearing how it works out for you as well. We use an iPad for MotionX HD nav... but it's relegated to between the seats until we finalize a solution... I was looking at the arm that connects to the seat rail bolt but never pulled the trigger...

We're looking for a mount for the backseat of the Countryman. I can't see wanting it in my MCS so much since I generally am solo in that vehicle. But for the CM it will be useful for my daughter to watch Netflix or something on a long trip. Then again, I think she's pretty happy just holding it in her lap. I'm still planning on getting one of the mounts once something good becomes available.

Scosche iKit is interesting

Query Scosche iKit replaces car stereo with iPad

cool solution.

I'm interested in creating a custom fiberglass dash with an iPad inset that replaces the Large Circular Analog Speed, the Climate Controls. Essentially an insert for the Ipad to control everything. I have no issue in writing the application if anyone would be able to advise on how to hard wire in to the dual pin connector and climate control.

The goal:

Speedo and features from the Tach display, Climate control, CarFi connectivity,
GPS antenna connector option, After market amplifier connector (Ipad can't power a REAL sound system), additional USB IN.

Just drop in your IPAD and monitor all car functions would be nice as well, I know there are several Dynatune software apps already. Maybe this could just be connected via ODBII? I really don't have the care wiring tech knowledge. Especially for things like features of the car being embedded into the ROM chips on the Speedo.

If someone knows - let me know. Not guesses but definitive answers as to how to actually hard wire in.

One option for the headrest mount is this. It says it will work with or without a cover/case on the iPad also.

The After market Input would be easy you would simply need a 3.5mm to RCA (something like this)cable to run from your Ipad (it would be worked in to the mount obviously) to the Amplifier.

Now the only problem I can see with this is an Ipad only gives you two channels a Left and Right. The amplifier will only be able to use those channels for either the front or rear not both. So you would either need an RCA splitter (not recommended) or a second amp (recommended). You would use the pre-amp out from the first amp and connect it to the second amp which will give you your other 2 channels.

The next thing you will need is new speakers. I have infiniti kappa 6.5"components up front and infiniti kappa 3-way 6x9" in the rear. I love them definitely worth the money.

You may have known some of this before but its better than if you didn't and I didn't explain.

Hope this helps,

Austin

Also I forgot to mention, the tach is a Dummy gauge. It wont work unless the speedo is connected you may need to figure out where to at least mount the circuit board so your tach still works

I'm not sure but I would bet that it is not sturdy enough and your iPad will wave around like a rose in the wind, or a wacky waving inflatable arm tube man.

iPad 2 Mount Cooper

Greetings.

I would like to first offer a suggestion for the guy getting an ipad mount for the back of his Clubman. I am sure you have seen these, they are everywhere, but something that attaches to your headrest arms, I think would be easiest and best.

Something like this:

http://www.wareground.com/articles/t...et_you_type_so

In reply to my previous post (which I have quoted below):

I got the mount and it is awesome. I made a video to show you how it works:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXOZyTR77Hs

Also, If anyone is interested, I just ordered a sweet ODB II connector wire today for the ipad / mount. If you are not aware of ODB II, it is a connector (that is just by the left knee on drivers side, behind panel) that gives out a live data stream of you car's stats. There is a free app that comes with the connector wire but it is not really that cool and it is not large screen coded for the ipad (only iphone app free version). The sweet app is another $50 (the wire is $100) and it is called DashCommand. MOst ODB II connectors (if you're into this sort of thing) are wifi or bluetooth and run at least $300 without apps. It will also charge the ipad (I think I read).

ODB II Connector: http://gopointtech.com/

app: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dashc...321293183?mt=8

This should be very cool once it is rolling. If anyone is interested, I will post a video of how that works too.

Peace.

Hmm. Verrrrrry interesting. I like the mount, although to be quite honest, I worry whether the glass of the speedo is strong enough to support it through bumps and such ... I'd like to hear your report on it!

Also interested in the OBD-II gauge video so if you could post that that would be great. It's unfortunate that you will have to choose to use either the OBD-II or a digital audio out, but I guess that's not too bad.

The glass of the speedometer is not glass but plexi so its not ging to break.

I am not sure why I would need to choose between my audio out or my OBD II? I dont see the relation. ODB II is not concerned with audio. I will play music out of my headphone 1/8 " output into my line-in on mini, in apps like ipod (or whatever else that plays music and runs in the background), and I will use the app for OBD II at the same time.

I will post videos of the ODB II adapter + app when I receive.

Peace

goPoint and DashCommand Review

Hey guys.

I got the goPoint today and downloaded the ipad app DashCommand.

Check out my video for the review:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rskNsr1L7_0

Some additional information / questions.

There is an area in the app to enter various metrics on the vehicle, metrics such as fuel tank capacity, curb weight, engine displacement, tire size specification, Maximum engine speed (RPM), etc. The ones I just listed were the ones I found in the manual. There are several other metrics that I am yet to figure out such as drag coefficient, frontal area (ft^2), etc.

Many of these values are defaulted to a "standard" value but I want to tune it to the best of my ability. Other metrics include the MAF PID, MAP PID, and Lambda PID.

There is a doc on it that lists the types of specifications and options:

http://www.palmerperformance.com/dow...e_Settings.pdf

Take a look if you have time or think you know, or know where to find the info. I am driving an '09 Cooper S

Hope you liked the reviews. Cheers.

Sorry, the reason I said you'd have to choose is because the OBD-II connects using the dock connector on the iPad, and *normally*, you should choose the same for the audio out, since the quality of the dock connector is higher than that of the audio out. But yeah - in the end, you CAN have both by running a headphone wire from the top of the iPad to the AUX of the car -- true that.

Don't think that price included shipping...

I just ordered the same set up from the same place. Suction cup, bracket and no middle arm...and it cost $29.95 plus $10 ups shipping. However, I've been considering various mounts for a long time and nothing will fit in as neatly as this. One difference, I have my audio out connected with a 10 pin connector as opposed to the headphone jack. That connector goes to a JL Cleansweep. I don't know if the SQ is any better ( still analog ), but sounds very good to me!

Please do.

I think the speedo plexy is very thin and may not support the load of the RAM and iPad. A good pothole may introduce some Gs and the plexy may get out of the frame... Just uneducated guess...

Audio out and charge connector looks interesting

http://www.scosche.com/consumer-tech/product/2182

I use the 30 pin out to two RCAs and get pretty good SQ. Think the cable from Schosch. Will allow me to charge it at the same time - assuming I connect to the right charger. The extra video RCA I suppose I will just cover with electrical tape...
