You should still have the CD changer port in the passenger side panel of the boot.

All of this info is great, but will the auxillary work if I have Satelite Radio connected already?

 

There's an upgrade cable that is compatible with the iPhone/iPod Touch 5v charging requirements. They're available through MINI and if I remember, kind of expensive, like $50 or something, but i needed it to keep my iPhone charged.

 

This is all great info! The DICE product seems quite big. Where would I hide that thing? Does anyone have any pictures of one installed?

Wow, this thread is exactly what I've been looking for. I also have a 2003 MCS which I bought used a month or two ago, and the CD player in the head unit doesn't work. My little fm transmitter is teh suck, so I was looking for a more permanent solution.

I'm not really looking for complex integration, I never use the play lists or sorting on my IPOD nano 4g as it is. I only really use shuffle, or pick an artist. As long as I can control the volume through the steering wheel I'm happy.

My main question for folks is, what do you use to hold your ipod now that you have the fancy integration? I found the Kuda dock, but it seems like too much, and throwing it in the cup holder seems like too little. Does anyone know of just a simple dock that will mount the ipod to the dash somewhere, and still allow access to the dock plug in the bottom for the grom adapter?

I found one on minimania.com which adds it as a flexpod, which is cool, but the mount and the flexpod is $119 total, which is too much for essentially a plastic cup mounted to the dash.

I also have the same question about having satellite radio and IPod at the same time. Can't plug both into the CD changer location. What's the solution? FM modulator is NOT a solution. Someone out here must have both, please chime in! THANKS.

 

I installed the AUX input for my Garmin output but it could easily be used for a satellite radio output. I have a USA SPEC iPod adapter installed into the CD changer plug for my iPod and it also has an Aux input should you choose to use it.

And remember, if you install the AUX jack, you don't have to install it in the glove box. I installed mine centered under the row of switches in the lower middle of the dash, but up forward under the plastic trim piece. There are many other places you could install it as well.

By using an AUX input for the satellite, you don't have to use one of your iPod adapter playlists as an input for the satellite and you just use the Mode button on your radio to toggle between the inputs. Hope that helps.

Oh, and another thing I did was buy two additional factory Mini cigarette lighter sockets and I installed them way forward, left and right in that vertical panel at the front of the center cubby under the switch panel. The left one I use for my Garmin, the right for my cell phone charger. And the stock one in the middle is used for my Escort. Nice and neat and keeps the plugs out of the way.

Long answer. I had an iPod Nano and wanted to do the same thing.

I tried the DICE-HD unit (never connected the HD part) and while the idea was cool it never worked right. DICE replaced and it worked better but still glitchy. By the way it plugs into the CD player jack in the boot and is hidden up under the glove box.

I then bought an iPhone 3G and discovered what others have that it wouldn't charge due to the firewire/USB pin-out change. It's still installed (never had the time to yank it out) but I never use it.

I then bought a 3G Carcomm cradle from Kuda. $$ but perfect for my needs. The Kuda base was about $50 and the cradle was $99. The cradle's cable had a 3.5mm jack for an aux port and a cig lighter jack for charging. It sat up high where I could use the GPS and get a good Pandora signal. Note: You don't want to connect the headphone jack to the Aux port but rather use a docking cable which this cradle did...the line-out signal is much cleaner and sounds noticeably better.




Under my bolster I hardwired in 2 12v adapter jacks. One is hidden for the cradle power, and the other is in my EuroShelf Bolster for my GPS, visible so it can be removed and taken with me for use with rental cars on travel. I also put the Aux port there so the cradle cable could plug into both. (Note I'm not good with this kind of stuff so that should tell you how easy it was)

Now I've upgraded to the iPhone 4 and it can still fit in the cradle but with slop left to right and no lip in the front to hold it in place. I'm envisioning a cheap mod using modelers plastic bits to correct this but also considering a totally different option.

Since I'm thinking about getting an Otterbox case, it won't fit in a dedicated iPhone cradle, so I'm probably going to buy one of these and buy a cheap USB-to-12v adapter. I'll then either put the iPhone down lower without a cradle (I have a GPS now so...) or I'll buy a generic cell phone cradle.

 

I don't know If this will help at all but I just installed and Aux Input into my 2005 MCS with Nav. I bought the kit from the dealer for $43 and installed it where I had a blank spot with all the toggle switches. I took so time but It looks really clean.

Got an aux input for Christmas and I'm going to install it in the blank switch spot just like you did. How did you drill the hole? Did you get that whole panel out? Any gotchas on that? Or did you just drill through from the front with it still installed?

Anyone install the grom unit with the hk unit? I am wondering if it will work with it.

 

I installed it in my 2004 MCS w/HK. Works great. I can change tracks with the buttons on the back of the steering wheel and everything. The Grom unit I have does not send the song title to the head unit display -- but I think that is fine. I wish it also had an aux in for non-iPod devices -- I think the newer units from Grom may have that.
