Upgrade 08 Hi-Fi - just the speakers

So I'm sure the information is around but I've read a bunch of posts and just got myself confused I think.

I'm interested in yanking the speakers from the Hi-Fi and replacing. I've thought just the front 6? Or do the rear 2 (4) need to go too? Will the Hi-Fi amp be ok with that? It seems it's easiest, most cost effective and worth while to just to the front stuff?

So from there, what do I need to get?

• 2 treble loudspeakers in front, 26 mm [~1 inch]
• 2 mid-range loudspeakers in front, 100 mm [~4 inch]
• 2 bass loudspeakers in front, 150 mm [~6 inch]

?

I realize over hauling the whole thing would be great/ideal/cool. But between budget(lacking) and my willingness to be content I think this approach can work? If this is a dumb pipe dream, tell me. I've made it this far with the "Hi-Fi" but it's a joke so I'd love to improve it.

I think 6.5 will fit in the front, it depends on the actual dimensions. There is a thread somewhere with the exact size. I know 4" won't fit, they need to be 3.5". I understand the 6x9's are a pain to get to, but I have heard worth it.

Good Luck.

I usually use crutchfield for research and ebay for purchasing.

Most people go with a component set. That is a set that comes with woofer (6.5") and tweeter. Then they separately source a 3.5" speaker. Some speaker makers make 3 way sets also. They are usually more expensive. Backs are 6x9. It is a relatively low power system so also keep in mind the sensitivity. Higher sensitivity will be louder with same power input. I think the factory speakers are actually 2 ohms, maybe someone can verify. Using 4 ohms will be fine though.

is the back worth doing? i'm thinking i could just do the front and fade if needed to avoid distortion if it's a problem (it's what i do now).

i was told to check out jl for this stuff. i found a (i'm sure not the greatest) component sets on ebay (evolution - tr series - 6.5" & .5") and then a pair of 3.5" (evolution c2) speakers. would they need to be the same line of speakers or would an combo probably be fine?

I would try to stick with the same brand and line of speakers. The top end JL stuff is good, not sure about low end. Someone recently posted an install of Alpine Type R components. I know you can get a heck of deal on ebay for those. Other good brands are Focal and MB Quart (higher end). The key is to stick with a Major brand and not some off brand. Alpine, JL, Focal, MB Quart, Clarion, Kenwood and Pioneer. Also check caraudio.com. There is a forum there with reviews.

I haven't done any of this in the Mini yet so I am just basing opinions on what I have read and done in previous vehicles.

yea i'm sure i'd go with one of those brands. i had some mb quarts in a mercedes and was always happy with those. i'm guessing about anything will trump the stock stuff.

i still can't get over how bad the hi-fi is. it seems things are acceptable and what not, then some song comes on and it all falls to pieces. this morning it was charlotte gainsbourg...it was awful
