Has anyone replaced the OEM Navi Screen with Aftermarket

I have a mini, 2004, bought used, which has the Navi. I like having the screen and the look of the stock radio and steering wheel mounted gauges. I do not like the Navi system. Upgraded maps are $200, and the even the newer Navi is still pretty sad compared to what could be there.

I was thinking of replacing the Navi with an aftermarket, putting the aftermarket system in the same place.

It seems like I could put anything that supports a video screen in there. The easiest thing might be a laptop under the seat with a remote touch screen monitor.

Has anyone any experience doing similar things?

Does anyone have experience in PC/Mac based Navi systems?

Cheers,
D
