Steering Wheel Controls

I just switched out the two-spoke multi-function steering wheel on my '02 Cooper with a three-spoke I found on eBay. The new wheel has a couple of buttons I can't figure out. On the audio side there's a button marked "R/T." On the cruise control side what's "I/O?" Here's are photos...

The I/O button on the right hand side is the cruise control on/off button. (On my R56)... You're in the Gen 2 forum.

Hi,

The "I/O" button on the right is to turn Cruise Control on and off.

My Mini has a "Voice Command" button on the left, with a little graphic of a face with sound waves coming from the mouth. I guess the "R/T" means "Radio/Telephone" since those are things that you can use Voice Commands for. I have the factory Nav system and it uses Voice too.

Thanks, guys. So what does the left-most cruise button do (the one that has the speedo symbol)? I've been mashing that trying to turn on cruise to no avail.

That one sets the cruise control at whatever speed you're traveling.

p.s. Ironically, I wish I could have my two-spoke wheel in my R56 with the buttons on the back of the wheel. I miss it.

No, the speedometer looking button on the cruise control group is the RESUME SPEED button...

Here's how it works: Let's say you set the speed at 65 MPH. Then you have to slow down, so you can either stab your brake pedal, or better yet, coast, by pressing the I/O button once. This turns cruise off, but not FULLY off yet, (press the I/O button once more to turn it fully off).

Now, let's say you now wish to resume that 65 MPH speed. Just press the speedometer looking button, and your MINI will accelerate to that speed you had previously set...

Steering Wheel Replacement

Could anyone tell me what would have to be done if I switched out my regular steering wheel with a multi function wheel if it would work or if wiring and programming would have to be done?

Depends on the year and model and what options you have so post that info and we can help you.

Steering Wheel Replacement

It is a 2007 mini cooper not an S version. It has a manual 6 speed manual transmission. It has a trip computer, part of the stereo and a cd player. Is this what you are looking for or do you need more. I see in other forum you reference r50 r56, how do i find that out?

Sort of what i am looking for.

R50 & R53 are 2002-2006 Cooper and Cooper S models
R52 is 2005-2008 Cooper convertables
R56 is 2007+ Cooper and Cooper S
R55 is 2008+ Clubman and Clubman S
R57 is 2009+ Cooperr Convertible
R58 is 2012+ Cooper Coupe
R60 is 2011+ Countryman
Classics are anything made before BMW bought the rights to the name somewhere around 2000

More details on this can be found in the general talk area.

So now back to the steering wheel controls.

It from what you have said it seems you will need a couple of new modules and possibly some wiring, the new controls for the steering wheel and a lot of patients. Adding them can be a pain if all the correct parts are not there and in some cases it is a crap shoot as to which ones will work the best.

If my memory serves me correctly Porthos (a member here) has a long ordeal about installing the MFSW. I am not finding the thread right now but check with him (send a PM) and he can probably find you a link to it rather easily.

1 (one) and 0 (zero) is binary code for on and off. It's a "power" button.

Thanx, Justion! I got the "power" part but I never would have come up with the "binary code" answer on my own (Journalism / English major!)! Appreciate it!

Just got my 2012 Countryman (base), automatic a month ago and finally had a chance to use my cruise control. On the frwy, I pressed the I/0 button to set the speed I wanted and got nothing - no message on the tach, didn't maintain speed, just nothing. Looked at the manual, said the DSC button needed to be "off". I didn't try it 'cuz I was worried I'd lose the safety feature of having it on, so I thought I'd ask here if I'm reading the manual right: Do I have to turn of DSC to be able to use the cruise control feature? Or, do I have a problem with my new car? (sorry in advance for a stupid question...)

the dsc does not need to be off to use cruise, i have used cruise in dsc and dtc and with dsc/dtc off

to set your speed
1) press I/O to turn cruise ON (cruise light on speedo comes on)
2)press + to hold current speed

on cruise, press + to increase held speed 1 MPH or press - to desease speed 1 MPH (you can also press and hold the + and - buttons)

to stop using cruise depress clutch pedal or brake pedal or I/O once
to resume last speed press RES button

to turn cruise off
if currently holding a speed on cruise, press I/O twice
if not holding a speed press I/O once

Thank you so much, Bmwr606! I was able to view your email thru my smart phone while driving and your directions were excellent!! My cruise control worked perfectly!! I can't tell you how relieved I was to find I didn't actually have a problem with my MINI - like I suspected, it was "user error" - LOL!

Not to be a stick in the mud, but please stop reading email on your phone while driving....... It's just not that important, ya know?

Oh no! The old read the instructions first trick... my wife hates it when I ask her if she read what the manual says about anything
