The MC I am about to buy will be replacing the Subi WRX that was just stolen from me. Needless to say I want to make sure this thing is safe and secure.

What is the factory security system like? Is there even one? The salesman gave me a spec sheet to take home and I don't see anything listed in regards to security/alarm. The car is an '06 Cooper with premium and sport package, not sure if it is included in any of those packages.

 

The MINI requires a key to unlock the immobilizer. The key has a tiny RFID chip in it - you can confirm this if you sit in the car with door open, and hold the key near the ignition ... the "key still inserted" chime will ring, even though the key is not actually inserted (because the car senses the RFID chip).

Separately, there is a dealer installable alarm which adds a "siren" if the doors are opened or car lifted when the alarm is active (which typically is whenever you lock the car). The kit also adds a little flashing light on the end of one steering wheel control stalk, that flashes when the alarm is active.

 

Ian is right about the dealer installed alarm I had it in my 06. I liked it the blinking light, warns would be thieves that the car is alarmed. Plus if the car is lifted, or even jostled hard the alarm will go off. Mine went off on the Hatteras ferry in bad weather.
