You can get adapters for the charging.

You don't have to charge it, if you have an adapter like this: http://www.griffintechnology.com/pro...-usb-converter
It fits between the iPod and the MINI.

Does anyone know if the "Griffin" adaptor or any similar product is available from any other source? Their website has show it to be out of stock from sometime now. I have a 2009 MC with the under dash "y" cable ipod hookup and a 5th generation iPod Nano on the way
(btw, my car handles the old "classic" ipod with no issues at a -- unfortunately I have been borrowing one of those from my other car and the user of the other car threatens to make me sleep outside on the porch if I don't give her ipod back).

Indeed, which adapter, Apple has a whole page of adapters including quite a few Griffin ones.
Though if you're thinking of the Griffin Charge converter I linked to above, Amazon say its not yet released, and Apple don't admit to it anywhere. I could have sworn I saw one on the shelf at my local Apple store. If that doesn't exist you could try a Scosche Passport instead. I use that with my 4th gen nano in the MINI, I'm not that fond of it because it makes the whole thing very long at looks unstable, and almost doesn't fit in the secret compartment. The Griffin one looked nicer as it was shorter.

That's what I'd expect. It was the 4th gen nano, 2nd gen touch and iPhone 3G that had the change to the charging, so those and later are the problem ones.
that and the 3rd gen and below ipods, my 3rd gen ipod doesnt work, but my 5th gen does.....not sure about the 4th.
Hi to everyone.
Do I need a special cradle/dock/adapter to use a iPod Nano 2nd gen? I do not need one for my BMW but there is a lot of discussion about adapters here. The car that I have ordered does have navigation and some sort of iPod prep.
Thanks for any help that can be shared.

My 5g Nano AND my iPhone 3GS both charge properly in my '10 MCS (week 44 build). I don't know what changed - the Y-cable, the power output at the USB port itself, or whatever - but it works now and works properly. I'm suspecting that the Y-cable has been updated, but I haven't confirmed it.
