Navigation & Audio Harmon/Kardon upgraded stereo - delayed build (Dec)
I'm disappointed, and I'm no audiophile with unrealistic expectations.
I'm mystified why a DSP amplifier, at a significant upgrade cost over the standard system, has no further tweaking options than bass/treble/fade/balance. There should be several DSP modes, the ability to disable DSP, and at the very least, a mid adjustment. Nope. The mids sound completely lacking - lots of bass/treble to your heart's content, but hollow/lacking midrange. Also, at shockingly low volume, the door panels and rear view mirror vibrate like crazy, as if the thing is running 1200 watts and cranked to 11. I chalk that up to the shoddy door panels. No vibration sounds to accompany this racket, but I fear that they will inevitably crop up over time.

I'm sorry to hear you are dissatisfied with the new H/K. I absolutely love it and find it much more superior than the one I had in my 2003 MCS JCW. My mirrors don't vibrate and my door panels are quiet quiet quiet and don't vibrate either. No buzzing, rattling, nothing and I have the bass at 100%. I thought for sure I would be pulling door panels off to "de-buzz" them, but whatever MINI did on my car, they did it right. I couldn't be happier.
I agree that there should be a mid-range setting though and the option to select the DSP, but I can't complain. The louder my music is, the clearer it seems.
That's a drag, no EQ options at all, huh? IMO EQ settings can go a long way toward improving stereo sound in a car, maybe more than swapping out speakers and amps can. My theory has always been that in a car your ears are always pretty close to the speakers and with the windows closed the sound doesn't have to be all that loud as opposed to a big room full of people. But with the speakers inclosed in irregular door panels (as opposed to nice wood enclusures ) and with the car making all kinds of noise the frequencies that get to your ears are way different than the frequences of the music. Hence improvement from a good EQ setup. You need the amps to EQ the power to the different sets (sub, backs, fronts) not so much for the actual power the speakers need to light up.
