USB port... does it charge devices?

I have an 07 R56 MCS, which obviously means that I only have the AUX port and not the USB port. If I were to purchase the USB/AUX adapter from the dealer, does it charge devices, namely a GPS unit or a non-iPod mp3 player.

Also, does the USB port provide audio output or does an mp3 player require use of the AUX input as well? Let's just assume that I don't have/want the iPod adapter, and am using the GPS' mp3 capabilities.

Thanks.

I can't remember the price MINI Oakville gave me for the purchase/install of the adapter. It's obviously not cheap, but I do recall finding someone' DIY thread on how to retrofit the iPhone into armrest that detailed the install. So at least you could probably save the money on the labour.

If you don't have the USB port, the adapter isn't going to do you any good. If you just want a USB port to charge from, you can get ones which plug into the lighter socket. That's what I've got for charging the wife's cell phone.(Costs about $10.)

The USB is low power variety, and by all reports is insufficient to charge most devices.

The USB does provide audio output. It reads mp3 files directly from the storage device and has its own D/A converter for audio output.

This is the first I've heard of a USB retrofit being available. The topic has come up a few times, and previously it was not possible. It would probably be a USB/Bluetooth package like the factory version.
