Aftermarket iPod integration/adapter

I've searched the forums several times but haven't been able to find what I'm looking for. I actually found conflicting information, so I probably have things a little muddled in my mind.

I have a 09 Mini Cooper and I did not get the Comfort package or any iPod integration. At the time I was in awe just to think I would have a AUX input. Now that I have my MINI, I watched a video online of how to use the MINI iPod integration and it showed how the radio controls can be used to navigate the iPod. I'm amazed, and definitely would've ordered that iPod integration if I'd realized how simple and useful it was.

So, already having my MINI, what are my options for playing my iPod in my MINI? On MINIUSA.com I was able to find the "iPod Adapter" under "accessories," under "shop". Is this the same thing as that video was showing? Is it relatively simple and cheap to install aftermarket?

There aren't two different ways for iPod integration ways besides using the Auxiliary input, are there?

Thanks for any help I receive

There are two type of iPod integration.

1. iPod adapter that uses the CD input of the head unit and it installable by the dealer. Puts the iPod in the secret compartment. Not usaable by anything other than an iPod. Cost to install probably in the $200-300 range.

2. Comfort Bluetooth/iPod - Factory installed and very expensive to do it after the fact as ther are many peices that need to be replaced and if the wiring harness is missing one peice then it also means a wiring harness needs to be installed Minimum of $1200 for parts alone.

Now if you are handy then option 1 is somthing you may be able to do youself. I do not remember if there it programing that needs to be done to make it work or not. Your dealer would be able to answer that programing part easy enough though.

Motoringfile has the installation PDFs up to look at, there's a few different versions depending on the installed audio system. They say an ECU update is required for any of the different versions.

Everything I have read has said that option #1 requires the dealer to do programming and therefore have been told price is $500-1000 (which I realize is completely ridiculous)

You can also look in to the mObridge system. I believe the price is around ~$600 but it will give you full integration to your vehicle's system so you'd be able to control functions from your MFSW or NAV if you have one...

Also at a much faster seek time than the MINI kit, among other features.

Like the dealer installed adapter, the mObridge also requires the ECU update.
