I purchased a 2003 MC at the beginning of October, I want to swap out the radio with one from a 2005 or newer so I can play MP3s and have the factory iPod connection. I called MINI of San Francisco to confirm that I could do this, and she told me no, it had to be installed by the factory. So now I'm confused. The radio seems to be the same size, did they change the size of the center downtubes? Or was she just lame, and giving false information?

 

Yep, it's a straight swap. I've done it myself.
