Navigation & Audio RDS/PTY Questions
Where do the categories display themselves? When I tune a station, it usually shows the station name or call letters. Some times it will show song titles. This is for regular FM and not HD FM. HD always shows song info, station etc but not a music category.
Where do you find the PTY categories?
On some of my FM stations, they don't broadcast the song information or call letters, only the program type. On other stations, I get the same thing as you do...the call letters or some random song information. On these stations, the RDS info only updates in "real time" when I am tuned to that station. Otherwise it updates once every few minutes or so I guess.
In my local area of Boston and Massachussetts only about 50% of the radio stations send any RDS/PTY data and of those that do only a protion actually send the song data, and it is always behind by about 30-45 seconds on most songs.
This is not something you can change. they are all set up buy a consortium. If the radio station decidedes to send the info then your radio will pick it up the radio station does not broadcast it then there is nothing to see.
The actual listings can bee seen here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_Data_System

No the Mini radio does not let you search by PTY. It only shows the PTY info if it is available.
I tried the sequence again, this time from the setup section and it worked.
I didn't see any "area' section though. Actually everything in the screen it took me to didn't have anything that was user changeable. I'll have to check it out more...

The "controller" is it the joy stick? The volume ****? Car running or not?
I had the key fob in but hadn't pressed the start button. It works with the engine running as well.
I go to the home screen with the 4 options. Move the selection down to setup, but don't press the joystick once it's highlighted, then start the procedure. Yes, it does select things as you're holding the joystick down and turning it, but then it opens the diagnostic screen when you're done. Make sure you are going 15 seconds. + or - a couple and it doesn't work.
It would be interesting if there was a secret hidden option in the maintenance mode that allowed you to enable the ipod integration without paying the dealer. Granted I haven't worked much on auto comp systems, but it seems strange that BMW would want to maintain two separate builds of the firmware - one for the Ipod - one for no ipod... but again - there is a lot I don't understand.

I understand - it just seems strange/annoying that BMW would lock it down so much considering you have to buy their hardware to make it work.
+1 on that. It would probably make the car cost more like $75,000 jsut so they could cover their warranty costs.
I haven't found anything on those screens that is adjustable. The non-Nav folks mention changing the rds/pty country code but I don't see where that is adjustable on the Nav's diagnostic menu. The Nav lets you pick your country in one of it's normal settings. Many that affects the rds/pty code as well.
Here is what worked on my 08 Clubman.
Please note you do this at your own risk I take no responsibility for any damage you may cause or other changes to the radio system that you may inadvertantly make.
You will be going into the service mode on your radio. This procedure may also clear all your preset stations. Please note that i have not had time to figure out what all the other seetings are at this point bu t hope to get downto working on that later this week.
Please read these instruction completely before attempting this. there are timing issues in some steps to make this work
1. Insert Key (fob) into Ignition
2. Turn Radio OFF by pressing the volume button.
3. Turn Radio ON by pressing the volume button.
4. With in 8 seconds press and hold the manual tuning button (the one with the m on it)
5. Press and release the button under the + sign in the screen a number of time until the "AREA" screen shows up.
6. Press the button under USA.
7. Press the volume button to turn off the radio.
8. Press the volume button to turn the radio on.
9. Check you stations.
I found that my radio was set to USA but they were still reading the incorrect info such as has been explained above. But after this procedure they all corrected them selves. So what caused them read wrong I am not sure but they are right now.

Did you ever determine what the other 'change-able' items were in those menus??
If my memory serves me correctly most of them are just data information and are really not adjustable. I think it is three or four that have some affect but that is it.
