Mine does not display random characters but simply the play list does not show or the Iphone is not recognized as an Ipod.
By turning the engine off and on, the situation remedies itself.
Of course it does not charge the 3g and since I am using the same cable I used in my BMW (where the phone was getting charged), I believe it is a Mini problem and not a cable one.

OK, so here is the score...

Essentially, I have the 6NF option in the car. BUT.....

In Europe they have not released the 3G cradle, even though they sold me the package! They are on backorder and some are in testing. Frankly, it seems crazy to me, but there you go. I mean, if they can ship them to Germany and to the USA, why not Europe! The iPhone is standard stuff!

Anyway, I have an old cradle and that means the iPhone does not work as an iPod right now even though I have the 6NF pack on the car. I am getting a Y cable (the new one) to tie me over until we get the correct cradle.

Not happy, but what can I do.....

That's awesome! Too much charging while using it will murder the battery.

Still no further word on Mini issuing a revised cable for the iPhone 3G?

This is frustrating for those of us who spent $1000 for Bluetooth/iPhone compatibility.

Got it. I works. Or almost...

Hi,

Just got my 2009 Dooper last tuesday. It's fully featured with Nav and all and I also got the iPhone 3G Snap in. Even if I still have a msg on the phone saying that the accessory is incompatible it charges and plays music. BUT I get interferences once upon a time such as old cellphones when you're about to get a call... Very annoying. Sometimes almost inaudible!
At the garage they tried to swap the snapon with another one (mine is dated 2008 with software 1.0) but then, even if it was a newer version ( dated Feb 2009 with software 2.0) it didn't work at all! Both are specifically for iPhone 3G. Next week they should have yet another version of the snapon, hopefully that one will be the one!

Cheers

Finally works as advertised...

Ok, got the right snap in. It works 100%. Charges. Plays music. No interferences anymore. I'm able to look for Artists, Albums, Playlists, Genres. The guy from the garage said that there are different models of the snap in depending of the options you got in the car!! Firmware 1.0 (2008) worked for me but had interferences, from what I understood it's for cars without 6NE and/or 6NF. Firmware 2.0 (2009) didn't work at all. Firmware 3.0 (The one I just got, 2009) works fine for me (I have 6NE, 6NF)

If you got any questions just ask...
Cheers

(Now I'd be curious to try iPhone 0S 3.0 beta with it to see if it still works!! Any Apple Dev in the forum that can check it out? :-)

Very interesting. I guess i'll have to go get the snap in for my 3G. I'm an iPhone dev, so I can test 3.0 with the snap in. I certainly can't discuss details with you guys, but I'll be willing to see if it works!

Thanks for the update. I think I will be giving my SA a call to get the snap in now. Good to know it charges it as the connector cord they supplied doesn't seem to charge when I plug it in via the usb/aux.

I'm sure I can get away with that! I'm gonna give my SA a call today or tomorrow and find out what it takes to get the new iPhone 3G snap in. I'll keep you all updated.

The snap-in goes in the arm rest and only works if you have comfort bluetooth and the smartphone prep option from what I understand.

From what I know there are at least two different ones depending on the options you have (6NF & 6NE: Snapin with firmware 3.0) or you don't have...

Now I'm confused - does the 3g cradle require the smartphone prep option or can it be used without it?

Honnestly I ain't sure. You should ask your dealer. But if there are 2 different ones depending on the options you have or don't, maybe you don't need it...

The snap in should work in either a 6NF or a 6NE car is is just what functions work.

With OUT Smart Phone Prep - It will power/charge the phone and allow access to the external antenna

With Smart Phone Prep - It will power/charge the phone, allow access to the external antenna, and allow access to the music/audio books/etc for mp3 playing.

iPhone 3gs new problems

Finally I had everything working with my iPhone 3G and the new adaptor. Sure, it had the "airplane" message, but it generally seemed to work and even occasionally charged battery. Now I have an iPhone 3gs, and no luck at all. NO charging in any way.
I am going to investigate Kensington pass-thru or Griffin.
Anyone else with ideas for 3gs?

I assume you would be giving up integration to the MINI MFSW and NAV (or radio display), right?
For just charging and AUX* I find using an Apple Universal Dock (with remote), a Griffin PowerJolt Car Charger or Belkin Mini Car Charger (smaller than Griffin), and a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable works well. The Dock provides a 3.5mm port from the dock port on the iPhone (best sound quality) for a cable to the AUX in on the MINI. It also provides a dock port for the charger. I haven't found this split on other setups, but I haven't seen the Kensington pass-through.

*Bluetooth works without any connections, so it works with this setup as well.

iPhone 3GS

Great idea. I will try your solution. Are you running it with an iPhone 3GS or 3G? (They both look the same, so I can't tell from the photo).
