Navigation & Audio Nav search vs. Google maps on my phone
Nav search vs. Google maps on my phone
I have the nav system in my MCS, and I really like it. Getting you to a location is as good as I have seen, and significantly better than my Garmin 660. However I just got the new Google Maps for my cell phone, and the search feature is really slick. Even without GPS on your phone, clicking a button locates you within a few hundred meters, and then you can type almost anything you are searching for (pizza, auto parts, indian food, etc.), and it will show you the locations and names of every one in your area. No sub-menus, categories to search through, etc. One step and you get the results. I now use the phone for search functions and then type the address into the nav system.
I think the makers of nav systems really need to look at this. Perhaps some form of internet access would allow for much better search functions, much quicker than searching through a DVD.

I saw something from a car show that did this a little while ago, it was in a BMW 7 I think, I forget if they plan to roll it out with just the 7 or all their cars. The nav used Google Maps data through the car's own cellular connection I think, on top of that it even had a full web browser.
google maps owns pretty any nav system it faces.
it just somehow needs to be implemented into a car with net connection as an option or an aftermarket device. soon though if what japtor says is correct.
another goal for the big blue g....

I love google maps!
I used to work for a software company that specialized in map based computerized routing systems so it goes without saying that I am extremely picky about any mapping software or nav that I use. Google's ease of use along with the ability to drag & drop your route in a few seconds is incredible... especially when you consider that its free.
