Why is it considered a "proper sub"

And those are 6x9s?

one that's designed to play below 80hz or so. Most 6x9's are midbasses....50-500hz.

and, yes, the Kicker F69a was a free-air/infinite baffle 6x9 subwoofer meant for the rear deck of 80's/90's GM sedans, among others.

I might be pulling these out to put in dedicated 8" midbasses and moving to a pair of 10" subs, if you have any interest. These are super-rare and it's unlikely you'd find a set, though there are cheaper alternatives out there.

Hey guys! Thanks so much for the help.... MUCH appreciated.

I've been doing a little bit of research on amps... e.g. what I'd want to put in my car...

One of the largest research points for me is crutchfield.... I know their prices are a little high... but it's a good starting point to pick an amp and start shopping around for other prices... wouldn't you agree?

I wanted to know... what's your opinion on these two amps?

Alpine PDX Series Amp
or

Eclipse Amp

I am fascinated by the eclipse amp... only because it uses an ICEPower system.. for the home audiophiles out there.. ICEPower is developed by Bang & Olufsen.. and I can first hand, recommend the quality and clarity of their products... I have a LOT of their stuff in my living room.

Additionally, a family member has an A8 L W12 with the B&O System which is amazing... to use just one word to describe it... that system, also, uses ICEPower technology.

However, I've never heard of eclipse ... :-/

Any advise?

I'll be going to BestBuy and Circuit City later today to see what they have available...

Eclipse has been making mobile electronics forever. Any Japanese import car from the 70's and 80's was using their stuff under their parent company name Fijitsu Ten. Good quality speakers, great quality head units and amps, though a bit over-priced IMHO. If the cost doesn't bother you, go for them.

Bang for the buck, I really like Memphis Audio amps myself. The baby Memphis Belle is one of the best integrated stereo units ever made, and the high-power one is almost a competition system in one box.

The focal set and maybe 1-2 8 inch subs in the rear panels?

If amps were much smaller, I'd love to put 2 in there,,, for the sake of space, I'd investigate the option of 1 amp for the set... and trying to fit everything in.
I have the Alpine PDX 4.100 in the tool well in my R56's boot. Great amp. No heat and compact. Mine is bridged to deliver all the power to the crossovers of my Diamond Audio Hex front speakers. I use the RAF outputs of the crossovers to drive the rear speakers (6X9 Diamonds). If you are looking for more power, why not get the PDX 4.150 instead of the the 4.100 ($200 more)? Depending on what you end up doing with the sub, you could get the PDX-5 which is 4X75 + 1X300 watt.

hmm.. in your tool well... did you cut holes in that board that sits over the tool well for ventilation?

I plan on only running at most, 100 watts to each channel,,,... which I think is plenty for that little car.

I really like that PDX Amp tho... since it's so small.

I used to sell Eclipse. I used to sell B&O (even been to their US HQ for training). If Eclipse is using B&O tech in their amp, that's pretty cool. Eclipse always made good amps, just big, simple and expensive. Other amps sold better because they were cooler but it didn't mean the Eclipse was a quality product.

As for the PDX...I've owned two, but never used them. I settled on the Rockford Power Series, mainly because I'm still suspect of a full Class D for normal music, not bass amps. It's an expensive amp if you don't like it, otherwise I'm digging the form factor.

I like that PDX.... A lot.. the eclipse just doesn't strike a chord for me... and the design of the PDX Amp is smaller... and easily able to be installed.

pgt: what's your personal opinion of B&O's home equipment. I'm thrilled with what I have...

My personal favorites are the BeoLab 5 speakers... I've got a few other models throughout my house.. but the BeoLabs are the most noticeable... just based on their look

B&O is way overpriced, but you get stellar build quality and design. You can do better in a conventional setup, but that misses the point. I love B&O stuff....the best engineering makes things simple, not Tokyo at night like most Japanese stuff (think buttons, lights and gizmos).

I still have and use daily my leather B&O tape measure and chrome B&O bottle opener, given to me for completing B&) University way back in '97.

Problem is these days, B&O has gone to the direct model....dedicated stores owned by B&O HQ near Chicago or franchises. No longer a line of product available through your local hi-fi specialist. Sort of the Apple model, before Apple launched Apple stores.

Yea I recall those days... they're losing a lot of sales... I think they were even sued recently in Europe over a discriminatory issue.

No, this thing really does run cool. I checked on it after a long MINI run on a somewhat balmy day (music pumped up) and it was lukewarm at worst. I guess the big test will come on a 100+ St. Louis July day but from what I've seen so far . . . I'm not worried.
