Navigation & Audio R56 iPod Interface Self-Install?
I wish we could just get a hold of the official Mini docs for removing what needs removed from the dash. This is from the IPod install guide downloaded from motoringfile I think...

Yikes!
I wonder how big of a cut goes to Apple?
I am surprised they let you know.
I purchased my ipod adapter unit from Morristown MINI (great price) and got the ipod tray from my local dealer ($20.00 and does not come standard with the kit).
Took about 40 minutes to install on a R56 2007 late model. The CD changer wiring and fiber optic cable is sitting right behind the secret compartment. That compartment is a snap to remove with very little parts to remove. Once everything was done, went to my dealer on a Saturday afternoon when they had no work in the service bay and got it done for free and took 20 minutes (they had quoted me $85.00 for the activation).
Extremely happy with my choice and works great with iPhone

Ordering instructions for cars with SA 493 (storage package) or SA 672 (CD changer)
The iPod-Interface storage tray H is not included in the retrofit kit and must be ordered separately
(part no. 65 15 0 428 922).

You will be amazed what you can get for a 12 pack of top notch beer or a case of fine wine
The "made for iPod" program used to carry a fee of 10%, so it would have been $31. I read somewhere that it is now just a flat fee of $4 no matter what the iPod accessory.

possible - even if you have to do it all
This weekend I did the self-install. Here in Europe and with one of the earliest cars ever sold (and no ECU upgrade).
Since I didn't have the CDC prep, I had to use the wiring that came with the kit. That made things difficult, as getting to the CCC (and also getting it back in after installing the fiber-optic cable, etc.) is less trivial than I thought. When all this was finally done I was able to do the coding using NCS - and this also worked after a while although I have the factory ECU version from 2006.
On my last trip I was already able to enjoy music from my iPod - good feeling after experiencing a nightmare with too short cables behind the CCC, re-wiring, and getting frustrated with coding that didn't work because the CCC hadn't rebooted.

I have been removing trim parts to get secret compartment retrofitted in my Sep 06 build R56 and also fitting the OEM Ipod itegration device.
I have found a connector screwed into the space where the secret compartment goes so have had to just move it out of teh way to allow fitment.
Pics can be found here:
R56 Compartment Connection - a set on Flickr
The one dangling down is the connector for the OEM Ipod that was taped up. The connector I am asking about is the one on the right.
Hope it is not the shorting plug (which I could not find) that the OEM Ipod Integration instructions mention should be removed. God the mini instructions are crap.
Anyone know what it is?

To me that looks like it is the light switch or the light to the main glove box.
If you have a 2009+ car there is also a plug back there for the Mission Control retrofit, but the plug you pictured only has two wires so that's not it.
