Without the Nav DVD in the drive, you can't use the navigation part of the system since the DVD holds the map data that is displayed.

I just installed the interface last night and I can't believe how simple it was. The hardest part was removing the sleeve in the secret compartment...

once you have that done, you'll see a FO wiring harness that goes to the optional CD changer. unplug the fiber optic lines from that harness and you'll see another harness that is taped to it a few inches back. Plug the fiber optics to that new plug and mate it to the interface.
that's it...
plug your ipod in and you'll see the MINI logo on your ipod screen.
I have a appointment on monday to have the interface activated and should be good to go!

So did you have to take apart some of the dash to get the compartment sleeve off? Did you actually have the changer or are the wires there no matter what?
I'd really be interested in trying to do this. Anyway could you do a step by step of what you did?
Thanks.

Great news to hear someone that installed it. Can you share some details on how the trim was removed. How close did you follow the official mini instructions? It seems they have you removing quite a bit of trim if I remember correctly.

Also, how much is you dealer charging for the activation?

My post literally is the step by step I used.
I did mine a little on the mickey mouse side since I wasn't planning on using the secret storage for anything but the ipod (my dash pieces are piano black and I don't plan on getting into an endless cycle of touch and clean).
So, I basically pried out the sleeve using a flathead --found out that the sleeve is held by 2 tabs on the sides.
I didn't take the whole compartment out. I mounted the interface at the top of the compartment using 3M double tape.
Not sure on the price yet for the activation. My dealer hasn't done many and would let me know when I get there...

Just so I get things right (sorry I'm slow).
You took out the compartment sleeve without doing anything else to the dash?
The wires you mentioned are just sitting behind it?

Man, could it really be this easy?

Would you mind pointing out where the tabs are on the sides of the sleeve? I think a lot of people might be trying this.

I didn't have the changer. as soon as you remove the sleeve, the wires are there just waiting for you...

yeah, I can't believe how easy it was...
once you pry the sleeve, it takes a little coaxing to slide out. once you're past the tabs, you're golden...

Definitely keep us posted about the coding.

Morristown has the interface for $263. I checked and shipping would be about $20 to Ohio. I'll have to check with our dealer about their coding price.

Thanks for the information. I was hoping you had done it like the instructions state. Does the adapter come with the different shelf or is that separate item you have to purchase? From what I have seen in person and understand by the pdf instructions, the compartent that you removed is replaced by one made for the IPod interface to be mounted to. Then the compartment is still there but much less shallower, probably only 2-3 inches. To me, this would look a little cleaner, but again, most will not get in there that much either.

no. no extra replacement shelf with the kit.
It's not a priority for me at the moment, but when I get bored or find the need to add the optional ipod shelf, I'll pull the compartment and mount it "the right way"...

but for now, my solution works nicely and was worth the 5 minute install.

So Long Beach Mini wants $280 to do the programming...
sounds a bit high, so I'm calling a couple of other dealers to gauge the range.

will update later...

Wow. Pricey. So with buying the interface and having the coding done it will be in the $600 range?

That is very high. You basically saved little to nothing doing your own install, if it costs that much.

That's the same thing that I was told... It seems a bit high since they are not actively utilizing one of the techs, they just plug it in and let it do the update.

The cost of the programming is the ONLY reason that I haven't picked up the adapter yet. I just cant justify spending more to activate the new adapter then it cost to purchase and install the old adapter.

yeah, I'll end up paying extra $210 compared to ordering it from the factory.
Since I didn't get to spec my car, not much of a choice since I want it...

well, got it done and I'm glad I did.
The sound is much fuller and richer through the interface vs. the AuX.
I've tried both the headphone line AUX and the type plugs into the serial, and the interface sounds much better!
I definite thing it was worth the money and not to mention a clean cubby area!

Does anyone have any experience with the USB interface? The addendum to my owner's manual showed an optional USB port next to the AUX port with the note that it would control most MP3/IPODs.

I meant that I paid an additional $210 compared to if I had ordered it form factory for $330.

I paid $260 for the interface and $280 for the programming = $540 total.

Mase, did your iPod interface come with a replacement secret compartment insert?

No, that doesn't come with the kit. You have to buy it separately.

That figures. Thanks.
And I guess this was mentioned earlier in the thread but I somehow missed it.

I got a new quote on programming this... $110. That would make it $260 for the part + $110 for the programming = 370! That may be worth it!
