Yes, the problem was in the amp "surround sound" module.

I was lucky enough last year to find a DPSM NOS on CL last year. Had it in my S, but really didn’t like it... too much fear bias. I had the fader set to 5 or 6 front.

Bypassing the surround chip

Recently I moved the DPSM amp to my GP but used Morel component speakers and a Pioneer DEH-X8800BHS. This Pioneer has a self adjustment function with a mic you place on the driver head rest. Haven’t had much time to list n to it yet, but the few min I used it, sounded good.

Someone on Mini2 figured out that bypassing the surround chip fixes the amp from popping all the time. Check out the last pix in my post, heat the ends of those chips and wire them as shown.

Your electronic equipment, especially the soldering station, made me very jealous.

Hi everybody, I think we have the same DPSM problem in our german Cooper S R53.
- What is the surround sound chip and the switch for, which does not work anymore?
- The 4 solder joints must not be connected to the board, only together with the wire?

Thank you

The DSP surround chip is super faulty. It’s the rectangular chip under one of the bypass wires.

Correct, lift just one end of those chips as shown in the image and connect them with wire.

Ok, and then I can turn the switch on or off, it has no function anymore?

What are the rotary switches on the board, because it is possible to adjust the balance and fader on the radio?

Once you make the mod, the switch DSP on-off becomes inoperative and can be removed. I don't remember what dials do what, I would just leave them as-is. If you do want to change them, take a picture of their current positions. Adjust the dials with a plastic tool and use the picture to reset them as needed.

That whole OEM DPSM was and still is a piece of crap.

Good sound “SQ” comes from quality components, source units (radio) and amps and that kit does not cut it.

The MINI head unit is a static noise box and the kit just makes it worst. If you buy a quality aftermarket HU like Alpine with a high power clean S/n ratio your system will be 100% better than any DPSM or HK system. If you spend a little more and add a small 4 ch digital amp like JL Audio or Alpine sell it will be perfect. After those upgrades the cheap OEM paper speakers will sound like high end system. It all about line voltage and the low signal to noise ratio from the source unit. The OEM unit is just junk just like most OEM units.
