New Generation of TomTom

Well I thought I would share this in case anyone is thinking of buying a NAV. I just bought a TomTom Go 910 & I love it. I wanted the Garmin Nuvi for it's size but the TomTom for everything else. Well wouldn't ya just know it My TomTom is barely a month old & BAM they come out with a slim version called the TomTom 720 that is slim like a Nuvi but has all the features (& probably many more) of the 910. It's just not fair

Here is a mini review from gpsreview.net..

While we will reserve full judgement until we get even more time working with the 720, it is hard to imagine this device not being a huge hit. We’ll reiterate that this device isn’t just a bump in specs, it really represents the first in a new generation of TomTom devices. We’re glad to see easier ways to obtain live traffic information, text-to-speech, a thinner size, and longer battery life than other models. Typically those specs would be cause enough for a new model. But the TomTom 720 will also set a higher benchmark in terms of personalizing the device by allowing map updates, downloading map updates suggested by other users, and building your own voice prompts. For an MSRP of $499 this GPS should be a big hit.

On the bright side, maybe that will lower the price of the TomTom One.

When I was researching I read a lot of not-so-good reviews about the TomTom One. While I loved it's size the reviews ultimately scared me away from it

What are any of the newer features, and will it have a 20gig HD?

I have to say, that's the least ugly of all the TomTom's I've seen - I prefer the aesthetics of the Nuvi to TomTom's built-out-of-a-bubble look.

Is there a huge difference in features between the two?

I purchased a Tomtom One XL back in May. I should have held out. The 720 addresses some of the short comings of my XL. The 720 is supposed to have a longer battery life (I think 5 hours), it has text to speech, Bluetooth for your phone and I believe better graphics.

I believe the unique feature of the 720 is you'll be able to make correction of the map database. I wonder how much I'll get for my XL if I put it on ebay.

It looks as though the 720 will have 2GB of flash memory instead. For me that would have been plenty for my music. I would guess the maps are loaded in some seperate memory somewhere?

I agree, I wanted the NUVI for looks but I got the TOMTOM because it had the ability to hook up to my computer & let me create routes using my big computer screen & mouse instead of having to do it on the tiny NAV screen. Plus the TOMTOM 910 had the features of the NUVI 600 with a much lower price tag & it's cheesy but the TOMTOM had more voices & John Cleese

But now dangit TomTom has to come out with a slim version that has all the functionality of the 910 (& probably many more features & improvements since it is 2nd generation) & the slimness of the NUVI. It's not fair

You can do this with a Garmin as well. Not out of the box, but once you purchase a map update you'll then have the software for your PC to create routes on your PC and transfer them over to your Garmin.

That's good to know but I didn't have to purchase anything additional to be able to do this on my TomTom 910 & the 910 is equivalent to the Nuvi 600 series & at the time I purchased, the Nuvi was well over $150 more expensive out of the box. I will say the Nuvi prices have fallen like a rock over the last month so I would suspect that Garmin is getting ready to release something new also So all you new Nuvi owners prepare to be mad just like I am about the TomTom 720

The TomTom 920 will be out by the end of the year too. Hopefully with historical average traffic.
