About to upgrade from HK to real system: Chop/splice vs. rewire thoughts

Hey guys

I just got the roadstersound.com enclosure, and I am laying out how to handle my wiring. Car is an 04 with fact. HK system.

I will end up with a small mono 300 or 400.1 amp to run the sub that will be part of the enclosure, and a small amp to run the separates that will be placed in the doors. I will likely locate the small amp where the stock HK is, or hide it somewhere else.

My question: Should I go ahead and wire the new front amp to "interface" with the factory HK wiring that runs to the front speakers, or run new speaker cables? I don't relish running speaker wire through the doors, but maybe it's not as bad as I think.

I will be doing a build thread once I get started too.

Thanks!

If you try and integrate your amp with the Factory Harmon Kardon it will never sound right or the Volume will work irratically. If you don't want to run new wires into the door you can try catching the wires at the amp and splicing from there. the best way though is to run new wires. Unless measured on a meter the human ear would not be able to pick up the sound differnce in your front door speakers or rears by running wires. I do it because it always makes me feel more confortable. I've been installing for 12 years I am a little picky. keep me updated on your build.

Cool, thanks.

I was planning on removing the HK entirely, my question was really whether people spliced into the HK harness at the back of the car to feed speaker level output to the fronts. I think that will save me a lot of time running speaker wire, or maybe it's not worth it. How is running speaker wire to the doors in a mini? I've found some cars a total mess with that.

Thanks for the reply!

Did you complete this?

Running wires in to MINI doors is a pain because there's a plug/socket at the hinges.

The H/K wires from amp to door speakers are pretty good - twisted pair, nice grade ... and two sets so you could put the crossover in the trunk - or use both pairs to feed the doors and gain even more wire cross-section.

Ian, thanks so much, this is exactly the info I was looking for. I love the idea of the passive Xovers sitting back and being protected in the boot.

It would be so cool to be able to find a mating plug for the HK (I already talked to you about this a while back). It would allow plug.play without chopping up the wires.
