Yep, that MUST be it. There is nothing in the manual on "how to display street names", becuase there is no such option. They are always displayed when you are zoomed in, in "Map direction of Travel". And I LOVE saying "Map Perspective" or "Map Direction of Travel" and watching the screen change. Voice command is pretty cool.

Robin how do you get the map in split screen. I know you can have it split screen when it's guiding you, but it sounds like you can have it split screen without guidance.

It is usually next to the first or the last letter of the name. Not easy to see, but it seems to help in the less cluttered displays.
That is the most helpful post I've seen in awhile. I would have gotten almost every street wrong in Ninja's screenshot without that info. It's not easy to see the dot either, I hope it's easier in real life.

The nav in the 1st gen MINIs can be in split screen mode all the time. However, I do believe that in the 2nd gen MINIs, split screen mode can only be obtained while a route is active (as you've mentioned).

Indeed, the small black dots are really hard to see in real life as well. It would be nice if MINI would change them to a more visible color and/or make them bigger. They do indeed help though.

Thanks, Chris G. for the spot-on info. Sure enough that's all it took to display the street names. Can't see the little black dots, but just seeing the names is better than nothing. And I really get a kick out of telling the nav unit what to do, too! Wish others in my life listened that well!

it doesn't help that the black dot blends with the black backround, sometimes I think that the street is split, but I find it to be the black dot
