I wanted to post this as their seems a lot of heartburn over MTH and unfortunately Don takes the brunt of it here.
I totally agree that the numbers that MTH advertise are far fetched. I mean how can anyone expect to gain 40hp of just a file? That part really is a marketing scam if you ask me. Now, with that said there is a benefit of MTH.
If you haven't been to Don's site, I highly recommend you go and read it. He has recently made changes to numbers out there that are much more reasonable. Folks, IMHO Don has really done his homework. I have taken his advice and love how much more power my car has now compared to before.
I have added a 15% pulley and CAI based on Don's advice and haven't been disappointed yet. As for the MTH, I bought mine through Don but was not disillusioned with what the file was supposed to do. It isn't about horsepower, which is just a small side affect of tuning. What it really is about is letting the computer know what is installed in the car and tweaking a few settings to make it respond better. That is it... The problem is that most people see the HP boost and think that this is the absolute solution for them and this simply isn't the case. Numbers have been posted but the bottom line is that you can post numbers all day and on a track even the slowest car can win because the driver knows how to run it.
Tuning is the art of meshing the car to the driver and I think that the MTH file provides a pretty good solution for us people that can't afford the tracked sit in tuning.
What MTH does provide is that ability to add a file upgrade with what you have in the car. Some people only added certain parts like myself. So, if I were to use the JCW software, the car would not really run that great as there are many other items installed that I don't have. Other products are the same way. MTH gives you a bit more flexibility in this department. If you have all the items installed that JCW uses, then by all means, that is a great solution.
You also have the ability to upgrade your file for a year (Tuner). I think this is where there was some heartburn because of MTHUSA. When they closed their doors, it left a lot of people hanging. Don did his best to help but I am sure that some were not satisfied.
Lastly is cost. I think for the dollar this is not a bad solution. Other vendors try to sell you a mini computer to load the file that is then locked after the upload. One unit I know of costs almost 600 dollars. So to me, the use of my laptop and a cable is actually very reasonable.
There are a lot of choices out there and MTH is only one of them. Take a look and shop around to find the best solution for you. For me, it was MTH and I am not disappointed at all. There is a definite increase in performance.
Thanks to Don for everything, including the new site. It really does help to shed some light on this touchy matter.
