After 800km done on Tuner V7, I can definitively say taht the flat spot is gone! Every single time I drove my MCS this past weekend, I never reproduced the flat spot, and it was smoother than ever before!

I guess Volker was right, the odometer trick to reset the ECU adaptive memory doesn't work, but a good 500km of driving does make the difference! When I first uploaded the new file, I felt that the flat spot was almost gone, but now, after driving it more, it does the job really well!

My MCS now pulls great from very low RPM and it doesn't bug or get flat at any RPM...

I guess time makes Tuner V7 even better!

Great job MTH folks

It may just be my imagination, but I think I'm seeing significantly better mileage with v7 versus the earlier "tuner" version. I did reset the "adaptive" memory, but it sounds like that's probably not a factor.

I'm getting numbers on the computer like 29 MPG average with a varied mix of driving, and 35 MPG instantaneous at an 80 MPH level cruise. Of course I also dumped 50+ pounds of excess wheel and tire weight... at the same time I loaded v7 I bolted on new tires and wheels!

I'm loving the new v7

I too have uploaded the new v7 and I'm totally impressed! It's difficult to describe, but the mini just seems to pull more smoothly throughout the entire rev. I don't notice much (if any) additional horsepower, but I didn't expect to. The power delivery just feels more constant and 'reliable', if that makes sense. I only have about 100 miles on the new file, so I'm eager to see if there is even more of a difference after I put an additional 400+ miles on it. I'm thrilled so far though! Great job MTH guys!

Volker,

I sent my files two weeks ago. When should I expect the update?

Thanks.,

What's the big deal?

Got the v7 updated tuner file and installed it. It took less than 5 minutes.

OH ... MY ... GOD!

I am surprised that there is such a big difference with v7 and my old tuner file. No flat spots. No more yo-yo. Smoother acceleration.

And I thought the old tuner file was good.

Thanks!!!

vt7 received and uploaded this morning

Much improved

But the flat spot is not entirely gone. Perhaps with a couple hundred miles to readapt, it will disappear. As Dark noted, perhaps 95% fixed. Still a very small lean spot, but not nearly as "flat" as it once was... nor as huge.

Where the flat spot was very pronounced, my narrowband A/F meter still indicates pretty lean -- not as much as it once was, and not as long as it once was, just a bit.

I also note that 4K - 6k pulls a hell of a lot stronger

All in all, vt7 is a BIG step in the right direction!

Well done, MTH.

Whatever you did, in the mid-range, I think my MCS would be a little happier with "a little more" of whatever it was?

Give it an extra 500km on it and you'll probably won't notice the flat spot at all! I drove about 800km on V7 now, and I can say for sure that the flat spot is not gone! It now starts to pulls strong from 2000rpm, and I can feel the power just getting better as the RPM increases!

Honestly, I think the flat spot kind of ruined old Tuner file, so the new Tuner file looks simply amazing and flawless!

Flat Spot

Have been having the same ordeal as all of you have and am trying to figure out from anyone in the know what their assessment of the flat spot repair would be. I've spoken to a gentleman who owns a company that designs and sells Mini parts both beneath the bonnet and exterior. I just ordered some rear grilles in chrome from him and he asked how my driving experience has been and told him of my frustration. He knows all about the "flat spot", the hesitation, the yo yo and explained their differences. I told him I've put in a 62mm throttle body and that took away the factory hesitation, but the California recall put it back with a vengence. He said that the 60mm throttle body would fix the problem, and explained in lay terms why. Couldn't explain that to you all now, but it made perfect sense. In any case I'm going to have the MTH v7 installed tomorrow just to try that again before I drop some more cash on this fix. How infuriating

Yes, exactly what BMDoubleU said, the V7 Tuner file should get rid of that annoying flat spot!

If it doesn't, simply get an air/fuel ration graph of your MINI, and send it to MTH, they'll sure work on your file to get the flat spot away!

I got my Mini back Volker sent me a second edition of the V7 file and it has made a amazing improvement... The flat spot is 95% gone and only very slightly exists between 3000rpm and 3500rpm. It is so slight and short that its not a problem anymore!!!

And there is heaps more power everywhere else in the rev range... The tacho needle now just whips around

I would like to Thank Volker & Franz for persisting with finding a fix for my car.

Very impressed thanks.

Cool! I'm glad to hear that you finally got rid of the falt spot too!

Give it another 500km at least, and you'll be more amazed! The flat spot kind of disappear with time!

Did you kept your bigger injectors?

Great!!

So did you get the latest software from BMW, or did Volker work around that?

Fudge! After 2 weeks, it warmed up yesterday to about 65 degrees F. Guess what's back? Yep, the flat spot, only higher up the rpm band than it was... and its "harsher" than it used to be.

Before V7, flat spot was 3k rpm to about 4k rpm, and would gently lose power, then pop back into power.

Now, the power drops out of the floor at about 3.6K rpm-- feels like DSC is kicking in. Power then explodes back at about 4.2K rpm.

The only way I can drive it and keep the flat spot from happening is to drive really slow or floor it. Neither is acceptable for commuting.

Damn, I wish I had wideband O2 logging so I can send to MTH. I'm sure it would be very helpful to them.

Franz, can we try again?

My Flatspot still exists but its still heaps better than the first V7 file I got. I can just accelerate through it, its still a little annoying when trying to cruise on 100kph, I will do what Volker suggested and get the latest BMW software as a base when I get the chance.

I think the biggest problem I see is that everyone who has the flatspot runs 380 cc injectors. I also had them and had the flatspot. Now I switched to standard injectors and there are still no problems with mth. last update: smoother run than ever before.

I don't have MTH or bigger injectors (but I do have 15%, plugs, wires, coil, intake, exhaust) and recently I just installed a 63mm throttle body (mini-madness) and now I am experiencing the flat spot right around 2800-3000 rpms.

I wonder if MTH would cure this.

The flat spot associated with the larger throttle bodies isnt fixed by software. Also, make sure the valve is closing properly, as that can negatively affect the drivability of the car.

Do you mean the throttle body butterfly or the bypass valve?
