I love travelling in the Fall, it's my favorite time of the year. We'll have to try and plan for this next year. I'll bet there's some awesome hiking in that area as well. Hope you all have a blast!
Just found out the group dose not want to go to the Dragon for our BBQ
The NON believers

We will be going to Cloudland Canyon State Park GA

Dragon advice...hmmmm
- If you see a gas station, fill up.
- Stay on your side of the yellow line always..
- Don't push it yer 1st (maybe even 2nd) time thru..
- Expect a lot of bikes - waive em around u if u get some waiting behind you to pass....generally, slower cars/bikes always pull over & let faster traffic pass.
- 90 degree left, a 100' straight, slightly downhill, a 180 degree right, exiting uphill to a 100' straight, repeat about 150 times

- If you see anybody waving and shouting, coming from the opposite direction..... watch out... a big truck may be headed your way
Thanks dude. Found LOTS of similar stuff 'round the net. I was looking for more Alabama-related advice, i.e. best route(s) estimated driving time etc.
And as for #3 from above, that's one of the main reasons I want to make a trip up before MOTDV
I know from driving the Ring that these types of road just get more dangerous the more "Familiar" you think you are

the Dragon (129) is a great road; tight tight turns though. If wider, swoopey type turns are your thing, Cherohala Skyway or Rt 28 are great too --- Cherohala Skyway if you like mountain views; Rt 28 if you like roads alongside rivers :-)
Good stuff - just drive and drive

Yeah, I was looking at www.tailofthedragon.com and spotted a route for the "DRAGON CHEROHALA LOOP"

at 118 miles it might be a bit much for a day trip, but I wouldn't mind making the trip during MOTDV
bahmatt, what I'm mostly wondering is if I should stick with the route I found at Google Maps ( East to I59, North to I75, then East at Athens, TN towards US411) which says 6 1/2 hours, or if there's a quicker way
If all else fails, I'm sure I can ask SB at the Rocket City Mini Dinner Monday night

I'm going down to the Dragon on Monday, for the first time.
Wife couldn't get the time off so I'll be flying solo.
Yahoo maps says it a ~8hr trip from home, but I'm sure I can cut a little time off...(no lockable numbers here!) Hopefully the weather'll be good so I can get some good pics I can show off here.
