Just to follow up... I ended up buying from a bunch of retailers who still had them listed at the older prices. Most people cancelled the order when they discovered the price hike, but I ended up with two for $467 each. Did the install in just a few hours -- it was very easy. Not more difficult than doing the diverted valve, except that you need to buy one wrench (open crows foot wrench). These DIY instructions are great: https://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/r56-hatch-talk-2007/273872-diy-hpfp-replacement-how-to-replace-high-pressure-fuel-pump-on-mini-cooper-r56-jcw.html

So $467 and part of one afternoon and it is done and the mini is running strong. I actually still have the other pump sitting on my work bench if anyone wants to try it themselves. Screw the dealer!
