Hard Starting MINI
Hard Starting MINI
Hello,
I'm experiencing hard starting in the morning when the engine is cold. The motor turns and won't even sputter. on the third or forth try it finally fires. When the engine is warm it starts fine. I recently installed an Alta cold air intake. Would this have anything to do with it? Could it be a dirty MAF?

Hey Gents/Ladies...
I just brought my Mini to Ralph in Denver to have them check that out (trying to get some mileage out of my warranty, plus they give new Convertibles for a loaner)
There is a Mini/BMW service bulletin about this in their system. You should take it if still under warranty and have them complete the task using the instruction they have in the system. I believe it included flashing the CPU. I can go dig in my car and get the specific Service Identifier, but the guy knew exactly what I was talking about when I called. It has something to do with cold ambient temperatures when you first start. When it cold out, mine would even stutter at a red light really, really hard. Now I am riding easy and I even got 1 MPG out of it so far.

My bad, its called a SIM...and the one everyone is looking for is called, SIM#12-02-06. I have a copy of it right in front of me. It applies to call R53, and R52 W11 up to production, 03/05. Careful though, they are also going to give you a little printout and a small lecture about gas quality. They are actually saying that Mid Grade, from a Top Tier gas company is what you are looking for. The print-out is two pages about less detergents in Mid Grade than "ultimate" and more octane than regular. Some crap about E85 is in there too, but I don't see where we will have much choice before you know it.
The mechanic comments say they reprogrammed my ECU in accordance with the SIM I mentioned. I have an 03' so I also had another SIM about some anti-rattle window clips and greasing the rails. I had a window problem.
