Visiting from Chicago
Visiting from Chicago
I'll be in the Co. Springs area this next week helping family move out there, I'll be MINIless
so I'll miss the twisties, but if I manage to get in some free time I was wondering if there are any "must sees" in the area. Not oppsed to doing a little traveling to take in some scenery or go to a grat hiking location.

If you're looking for scenery then go to North Cheyenne Canyon. Most people visiting like Garden of the Gods as well. If your MINI was with you then it would definitely like North Cheyenne Canyon. Pikes Peak is always a big draw. You can drive to the top or take the Cog Railway in Manitou Springs.
Not sure what type of things you're interested in but if you let us know we'll make sure to hook you up with some good info and keep you away from the tourist traps.

I'd heard about the Garden of the Gods. No MINI this time, but maybe later when I come back out to visit the family. I'd love to do some kiking, just as its something I don't get lots of time to do else where.
I'll post again when I arrive in CO maybe I'll have a better idea of my interests then, but any neat places or fun things to do would be neat to hear about. Driving to the top of a mountian sounds really cool and something I've only exer done as a passenger (Mt. Washington).
I'd like to follow the phrase "be a travler not a tourist" and get know the area a little.

Just a short hour down the road
from CS is the Royal Gorge Bridge and lots of hiking in the area.
Find details at www.RoyalGorge.com and enjoy yourself.
Frankly, if you have a rental car that is an expendable item and a drive up Pikes Peak is a worthy trip.

The Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument W of CS and N of Pikes Peak offer great, flat hiking there too.

Heck, and drop your wife off at the Broadmoor for shopping, dining and the spa. Just don't plan to ask her how much she spent.....

Be careful with altitude sickness if you're looking at hiking. You're coming from sea level so be aware that you'll be at about 6300 ft in Colorado Springs but the elevation changes depending on where you're driving/hiking. The top of Pikes Peak is over 14000 ft.
Drink before you're thirsty and eat before you're hungry. You'll probably lose your apetite but that's a normal sign of altitude sickness. Also look for headaches, dizziness, naseau. There's no strict formula to tell you who's going to suffer from it and who isn't but there are ways to minimize the effects and symptoms. You'll dehydrate faster at this altitude so always have a bottle of water with you and drink from it.
Not trying to scare you but just trying to keep you informed so you actually enjoy the outdoors here.

THanks for the advice so far, arrived this evening, i'll sit down after a full nights rest and put together a plan tomorrow, very upset I didn't bring the MINI as I've already encountered a few twisties. Spotted an PS/PS with dark tint head north on 25 around 7 pm, I'll check the map tomorrow to get the exact area. Already done a litttle running (destressor from lots of traffic driving) so I've got a bit of a feel about the altitude already.
Co Springs
Your visit would not be complete without visiting the Flying W Ranch !! Olde fashioned chuck wagon food and live entertainment...especially good for the younger crowd.
Garden of the Gods by bicycle is actually better than a MINI !!
Of course the trip to Littleton ....North about and hour to visit WEBB MOTORSPORTS !!!
This area is second to none in all of the USA for beauty.
Have Fun.

OK, MotorOn, an offer you cannot refuse....
Thursday night. OR afternoon, whatever.
If you can get your buns to Denver (south side) you can borrow my MINI for a ride. Me and the boys will take you up to our close-in little places.
I have another fun ride I can drive too, so no loss there.
Let me know, we can knock off work a bit early, maybe even buzz by WEBB...

I'll see if I can work out some details with the scheduling of everybody else that I'm helping move and send you a PM in a little bit.
I saw a CR/W MCS driving around Colorado College yesterday afternoon/evening alas I forgot my Cooper hat, but just seeing a MINI but a big smile on my face.
See my post in MINI5280 and Rocky Mtn under
"MAD-MEN" (yes, a takeoff of the illustrious StL group of Classic Mini guys...but they won't mind)
An impromptu ride has been scheduled for this Thursday, June 29th, 5 pm OR SO.....
See the new thread.

Ready for Thursday
Quickly planned ride, but those have proven to be the most fun too. See https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=72238 for the MADMEN poll and the MINI5280 Calendar entry for THIS Thursday here: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...=2006-6-29&c=2

I'll be there, I also wanted to mention I spotted an all IB MCS and a LY/W MINI on 24 this afternoon, I waved to the IB, I was in the green Minivan going the other way; and didn't see the LY quick enough to wave.
