Solo to Michigan...
So i did the calculations and where im originaly from in Michigan is 1,440 miles away... i average around 420 miles around the Springs and trips to Denver. It says i can make it home in a little over 3 tanks of Gas which will be around $160. Air Plane tix are out rageous so this is my own lil test... Wife says no way but i say i know i can do it in 4 tanks or less.
$320 round trip isnt a bad deal! Its like $400 for just one person by plane...
im taking me the wife and Tag (our Scottie)

Sounds like fun, last year we went all the way to San Diego in the MINI (Me the Wife and 13 year old son). Three 20" to 21" carry-on bags in the boot fit good. Plus when you get there you won't have to rent a car and you won't miss you MINI since you didn't leave it at home. Win Win.
at the considerable risk of being justly thrashed and then thrown out of the thread, I do believe that a reasonable estimate of the total cost of travel by car is in the range of .40 to .45 per mile.
Round trip at 1,440 each way is therefore in excess of $1,200.
travel by Mini however?
Priceless!

To your point tho, corporate reimbursement now stands at .51 per mile to cover gas and wear and tear on your personal vehicle.
Having said that.....I would (and do) drive that 1400 miles in a heartbeat.

I drove from Denver to Butte, MT (800 miles) a couple of weeks ago and only had to gas up twice on the trip. When I arrived in Butte, I still had plenty of gas! It's definitely cheaper to drive than to fly on that trip!
Went up to MI last year for the holidays from OK - averaged 27/28 mpg with two adults, two 45lbs dogs and luggage. Far cheaper than flying and if you can't stand sleeping in the car hotel rooms are pretty cheap (we only paid like $10/15 per pet too). Plus you get to have your own car and not worry about getting rides or rentals.

Good deal, I'm going to be doing a large road trip in August with a buddy of mine that is coming down from Canada. We are heading to Park City, UT to visit friend for a day, then going to Moab to see Arches and Canyonlands, across southern Utah (Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, Zion NP) to St George, UT... and then on to the Grand Canyon, and staying in Sedona, AZ for a couple days to do some ATVing. We'll hit Mesa Verde, Durango, and Black Canyon NP on the way back here to Evergreen. Should be a fun trip, with plenty of great MINI roads!
My Canadian friend has never seen terrain like we'll be driving through (he's in Calgary near the rockies up there), so I'm sure southern Utah and the Grand Canyon will look like Mars to him.
