I went through a similar exercise in March (cracked cyl 4 exhaust valves), and found that the cheapest and more desirable course of action is to get a new/factory rebuilt (2-year warranty) engine from Sewell MINI:

I dealt with Brandon: bramarti@sewell.com

Sewell engine cost me $3364 + $250 shipping to me + $500 core deposit. No sales taxes for out of state purchase.
Net of shipping costs, and assuming return of the core back to Sewell, it will be ~$3,800 out of pocket.
