E-Z Pass - Internal or External
E-Z Pass - Internal or External
I was about to order EZ-Pass online here and I'm presented with the question of getting an Internal badge or External Badge. Which is better for the '09 Cooper?
Also, while I'm at it is there anything else I should know about ordering one of these?
Thanks.

I was never a fan of the ones you mount on the front plate, so I have for the past 14 years used nothing but the internal 1 and have had no issues with it being read. they will also send you a new pass every few years as the battery does go after a certain amount of time.
Just make sure if you change cars or change your plate that you update it on the EZ pass site.

I have an '04 MCS with sunroof. I mounted my EZPass on the inner surface of the rear-most sun-roof (the one that in the R50/R53 does not move.) It works without fail. However, this does not conform to the EZPass mounting regulations, which requires that internal units be mounted on the windshield.

Internal, picked up a black suction cup holder for it from Strauss. I also covered the white EZPass portion that's visible through it with blackout tape to match the rest of my car's blackness.
Haven't had an issue except the rare "Low Balance" from me doing an inordinate amount of driving...

internal, hides in the Hidden Compartment(tm) and I take it out and hold it up to the windshield, then hide it back.
How do you guys tolerate having those ugly things stuck somewhere all the time?

FYI - My M-I-L has stopped driving, and we were swapping cars around, and I started driving her car for awhile. Anyway, she had an external EZPass, which we took off her car, and I put my EZPass (internal) in the car.
My wife took the external, put it in her trunk, to ship back to NJ MVC. Well, she forgot about it, and don't you know, external EZPass works from the trunk.
Just doing our part to help alleviate budget concerns with the State of NJ. You all can do your part also.

Recently I went down the turnpike and GS parkway and forgot to hold the ezpass up twice out of the four times and it read just fine from the center console. I guess it read through the sunroof without a hitch. However I know my daughter got a ezpass express ticket from the Turnpike when hers fell off the window to the floor once so the sunroof didn't factor in that time. Either that or I have to thank Pete for paying for me
Hmmm lets see now....a new snow blower to keep the snow away from OUR minis and he puts money into the NJ EZ Pass system for us...HE be da MAN!
If you carefully place it behind the mirror, you will not be able to see it from the drivers seat....it is also harder to steal than an exterior mounted one too!!
I saw one that was warped in dry carbon....looked very nice!!
Many folks with Gen1 cars as stated earlier have Velcro'ed then to the 2nd sunroof without issues!!

I wouldn't go as far as to say that. I live in a community where the vast majority of the residents prefer the external units that are part of your licence plate holder. You just happen to be one "in this thread" who happens to prefer the external units. I'm sure that there are many EZ Pass users who prefer them along with you.
