R50/53 Official Change on all Mini Shocks (Effective Immediately)
The Detroit News has an article on a recent interview with Jack Pitney (Brand Manager of MiniUSA) regarding the shock absorber change on all Mini vehicles (link at bottom of page).
Jack Pitney states "The quality issue in the IQS report said we had a harsh ride. You know, we do. Beginning this month we changed the oil in the shock absorbers which has a dramatic effect on the compliance of the suspension system. We're real serious about quality and we're keeping an eye on it." This statement refers to current May Production vehicles.
Jack Pitney makes it as if the harsh ride is a quality issue, which is obviously not the case. The harsh ride is a direct result of the handling and suspension characteristics of the vehicle (engineering design). By changing the oil in the shock absorbers (to a lighter weight), the car will ride softer/lighter, and as a result will not handle as tight/firm as before. It will be a noticeable change as well, or they would not be making the change in the first place.
They are effectively making a special watered-down version of the Mini for the US (different than everywhere else in the world) and this is not a good thing.
This is very upsetting to people that are soon to order their vehicles, or that currently have their vehicles on order (my car is currently at status 150 - Scheduled/In-Production - completed by 5/23). The problem lies in the fact that we will be purchasing vehicles that are essentially different than the ones that we had test driven. I also have a contract with my dealer, in which I will forfeit $2400 if I decide not to take delivery of the vehicle.
We have no information regarding when this change will take place, only that it will take place this month (May). We also have confirmation that this will be for both the Cooper and Cooper S (essentially for the regular and sport suspensions).
I am very upset regarding this issue because it seems very similar to the E46 3-Series issue that BMW had around '99-'00. Essentially, people complained that the car was too difficult to turn in parking situations (probably the same kind of people complaining about the Mini's cupholders and ride). BMW changed the steering rack in the middle of the production run (without giving notice) and dramatically changed the steering feel of the vehicle. People purchased these vehicles only to find that this was not the car that they had test driven. Eventually, (about 1 year later) BMW agreed to change back the steering racks to the old (heavier) rack on a per complaint basis. I don't want this to be another example of the 3 Series problem and thus I don't want a watered-down Mini!
For those of us that have a problem with this, we need to take action and let BMW know that this is not what should be done with this vehicle and that people should have the option to get a softer ride and worse handling if they so desire, but we should not all be forced to have it. We should consider calling BMW/Mini, filing an online petition, or possibly writing in to magazines, such as AutoWeek.
Most importantly, I would like a date/VIN # that this change is actually taking place on, so that we know with certainty which vehicles have the change and can make plans accordingly.

This sounds like trouble-
I for one would not like to have a softer suspension with lighter oil in my shocks. Who thought of that?
I think if people complained then they should be given the option on a case by case basis to swap out the older shocks for the softer ones. I think that the factory CANNOT change parts like that given the the orders placed months ago relied on a different shock to be installed. I say make the same suspension and have the option to build new minis beginning in july with the new shock once it is established that is what the owner wants.
If the swapped part acts the same from old to new then OK- change it. But if you are doing something that might alter the feel of the car in a dramatic way such as in handling then that would not be good.
Why not drop the runflats if harsh ride is an issue. that would make more sense. Except that the MCS has no spare.

>>This is one of the reason we don't get any of the cool cars the rest of the world does. Lazy stupid people who want a soft ride in a very short wheelbase sporty car.
>>
I agree totally, and have felt this way every time I've seen a comment about the "harsh" MINI ride- be it a private owner or an auto reviewer. I've got the 16" run-flats, and I love the ride. Responsive, agile, and full of communication. Mamma, please don't take our MINI away!!!

Yup if you want a soft cushy ride go get a Caddy Lincoln, or just about any Minivan.
The MINI is not some giant LuxoBargeSUV or passenger car on par with a C-5 Galaxy in dimensions. The MINI is the F-16, F-22, Su-35(arguably the most manuverable aircraft in the world) of automobiles.
Cool Su-35 pic.

Even cooler Su-37 pic. Still prototype though.

I have a question... Didn't these people complaining about the ride test drive the car before they bought it? If they did, they knew exactly what they were buying. If they didn't..... well...... the word idiot comes to mind, but since this is a nice forum I won't expand on that thought.
The ride of the Mini is near perfect, run-flats and all, for the type of car it is. A person brought up the point that they think the run-flats should be deleted. Why? If you didn't want them, I'm sure your dealer would have been happy to fix you up with a set of regular 15" rims and tires like the standard Cooper has (and probably thrown in a free spare to boot). Get it through your heads that the Mini is a performance sports car. You can't get the handling qualities this car displays by adding balloon tires, soft springs and non rigid shocks.
I don't mean to rant here (I feel it coming on though), but I'm really tired of hearing a bunch of whining from people who shouldn't have bought a Mini in the first place. Egad people! If you didn't like the ride, or you didn't like the motor, or any other major component, then why the heck did you buy the car? Did two Mini thugs come by your house, drag you down to the dealership, and hold a gun to your head to force you to sign the paperwork on the car? I don't think so! You did it on your own, and have no one to blame but yourself if you don't like the car now. Either learn the fun of the car as it is, or sell it and buy yourself a ________ (fill in the blank with any of the cushy riding so called sports sedans that are being passed off as "performance" cars).
If some of you find this post offensive.....tough! The Mini is the best thing to hit the American sports market in quite a long time. The thought of some people wanting to mold it into "just another small car" irritates me. What's next?... Oh, I know....after we screw up the handling, we can make the body a foot longer so poor old Aunt Maude can be more comfy in the back seat. Then, we can make it a 5 door hatchback. Can anyone say "Saturn wagon"? Nuts!!

What effect is this going to have on all of us who plan to Auto X our cars???? How does this level the playing field?? This stinks.......You knew how the car drove when you tested it.....go buy an SUV Barcalounger!
And those of us who have the "original" new MINIs...what will happen when we go to the dealer to get our struts or other suspension components repaired/replaced?
Sounds like this will be more business for aftermarket tuners and other outlets that can order "non-US" MINI parts. There's no mention that they intend to make this change worldwide...just for the US-spec cars.

This is very upsetting. This is why a strayed from VW. VW bowed down and softened there suspension on there GTI till it fealt like a Marshmellow.
I can't believe Mini is doing this. I am soo glad I have a 2002 Mini S with the ruff ride. If my shocks go under Warranty and they replace them with the softer riding unitsi will complian that the ride sucks!!!!!!

This is bullsh*t!
I have a May production MCS that is waiting to make it's way across the pond. According to this article my MCS will be among the first one to receive the water down shock.
I just cannot believe this...

Great car, but the company stinks big time.
The biggest beef I have with BMW/MINI is their inability to tell the truth and deal straight with their customers. While this isn't exactly unexpected behavior on the part of a major automaker, it's ruinous bad for a company that has the "Let's be your buddy" let's be different image that MINI has worked hard to cultivate. What a total load of BS.
For example, look at the article on cars.com (originally Detroit News) where this suspension change was reported initially. Aside from the ugly news about the softening suspension, we get a heavily spun story (i.e., LIE) from USA manager Jack Pitney about how MINI handled the too-small cup holder "issue"... Pitney says:
Well...guess what, I saved the letter (card) that came with my problem-solving mug. It says:
That's it. It doesn't say that they screwed up. Now, I personally don't give a hoot about the cup holders, and the mug they sent still didn't fit and smelled funny as well. Big deal. But why make up a stupid story?
OK, enough of a rant...back to the suspension issue. But these folks are really something...and it isn't something good.
I'm just really glad I don't have any of the serious issues with my car that some folks here seem to have. Then'd I'd be really ticked off.
PS -- how does not being able to get a tall cup in the cup holder translate to not having a "fundamental" problem with the cup holder? What are the frigging things for if not cups? On top of everything else (or maybe this IS the problem), Jack Pitney sounds like an idiot.

I’ll give you an example: Our No. 1 complaint in the survey was cupholders. There’s nothing fundamentally wrong with the cupholders, it’s just actually the placement of the cupholders is such that you can’t get a tall cup, a latte from Starbucks, in the cupholder. We sent every Mini customer, a month after they buy the car, a letter from me and they get this mug and it says, “We screwed up.” We know you guys don’t like our cupholders and this mug was custom-made for our cupholders and hopefully you can enjoy that latte.
By now you've realized that some cups don't fit in your MINI's cup holders. This may have forced you to use the old legs-as-a-cupholder technique. But your MINI likes turns, and your latte is hot. A potentially bad combo. The enclosed mug should be just the ticket. Fill 'er up. Motor on.
PS: We've also thrown in some stuff to help you get to know your MINI even better than you do already. Enjoy.

well, I say let it be a choice, why not? if we can have tons of roof body color options and mini cn buidl 10 differetn types of toggle panels, then I think they could give us a choice in teh kind of shocks or oil used in them.. I mean they said sports shcoks on the website ( for the stock ones as well).. not luxary shocks, most of us knew what we were gettign into excpet teh crazy few who bought the car without ever seeing, ridign, ordrivign one. I less concerned with the shocks and more concerned with thigns like the cvt lurch which came back, and whistling air conditioning, a slew of other production things.. however, it is nice to know that mini is at least willing to make a change for the majority, which mean if we ban together, we can get teh real fixes changed as well.
WOW this is not good news... MINI USA are you listening!!! I am now soooo glad I did not wait longer to order my car.... My MINI (april 03 production one of the last euro suspended MINI's?) will be autocrossed a ton and I do not want to have to get Konis right away..... But if this in fact does happen arround 600 bucks will more than fix the problem.... IF I had a May or later Production car I would be very very very very pissed....
So to MINI USA... Keep the MINI true to your advertising and image... DO NOT let a crying minority of soccer moms ruin the car for the rest of us....
OH and BTW my Cooper has SS+ and 15" holies..... the ride is fine.. not too rough at all!!!!!!

i don't want to end up with a compact, rolly-poly family sedan!
well...i guess this may be my 1st and last mini.
fortunately i had an april build date.

Squeaks and rattles...review posts here. This is a way to eliminate
squeaks and rattles. Again, if you test drove this car and didn't
realize it was going to develop squeaks and rattles...you are an

MINI has 12 different part numbers for springs, and now has two different part numbers for shocks. Why not have four different shocks. Light oil MINI, heavy oil MINI (SS+), light oil MCS, heavy oil MCS. MINIUSA- where common sense is an uncommon virtue.
MINI USA / MINI Division:
if you are seriously going to soften up the MINI to address "quality issues", you are barking up a completely wrong tree. You will anger a lot of MINI enthusiasts, and mess up what attracts most people to the MINI: the amazing handling.
At the same time, are you addressing the real issues like windshield??????
Don't make the MINI into a caddy!

While we are at it- get fixes for other design problems- the leaky coolant bottle, the computer updates for CVT, the cracked and stressed windshield, the stalling problems. Act now of be forever sorry

Guess these are the results from that JD Powers quality rating. I insist that the so cited "problems" are rather things you dislike about the car, and probably people stated they didn´t like the harsh ride.
I personally don´t like the harsh (sports) ride of the Cooper S, so I went with a regular Cooper with regular suspension and 15 inch wheels. This car is very comfortable while still maintaining excellent handling qualities. It is not a crown vic in terms of ride comfort but it still aborbs bumps quite nicely.
My point is: Mini is already offering the "soft" option, they probably just need to educate buyers when they test drive the car and offer a drive of two cars with the different suspension and tire rating. LET PEOPLE DECIDE
Sorry Americans. By the way, next year you will be able to come and buy an euro spec Mini in Mexico (brand new) and take it to the US. Let´s just hope they don´t screw up Minis in Mexico too.

We don't get the cool rear fog lights, we don't get the MINI One or the MINI Diesel now we get softer shocks
Someone needs to start a petition! I think if a complaint is made about the ride, then MINI dealers should change the fluid to a softer one. Keep the MINI a performance vehicle! What's next a CVT S
