16% reduction pulley: Will I need a dyno tune or a new chip?

I heard from a friend that when i install a a reduction pulley I will probably need a dino tune or a new chip because it will change my fuel ratio is that true? Now this guy is not a MINI guy but when it comes to cars, very knowledgable. He said since he's a Cobra guy and doesnt know too much about MINI, it might be different for MINI? Does anyone know anything about that?

You won't need an ECU software to run it safe, but you will get the most out of the pulley with it...

I agree, not required but you get the most out of your pulley with it.

MINI's have an adaptive ECU it will learn and adjust post install. The Cobra guy probably didn't know that.

Cheers!

Lucky Dog Garage was posting just a couple of days ago that tuning would probably not get much benefit with just the normal bolt-ons. The stock ECU should be able to handle a pulley, CAI and cat back.

I have these three and have no trouble.

Agreed w/ above. Until you start thinking about a larger throttle body and injectors, upgraded head/cam, etc., the stock ECU should adapt just fine to most mods. ECU remap can be beneficial if you'd like to further alter the driving characteristics of your MINI, but certainly not required.

Actually, doesn't the fuel ratio change on it's own depending on what map the ecu decides is best (from the maps that are loaded on it)? What your buddy is probably refearing to is that some people say the car will run lean with the reduction pulley. The ecu can't provide enough fuel to balance out the extra air being blown through. In actuality, most experts agree that the MCS runs quite rich from the factory and that there's still enough fuel with up to a 17% pulley. Past that you'll need larger injectors and different maps via a reprogrammed ecu (via MTH, GIAC, etc) or a piggy back unit like the Unichip.

I Just bought a Unichip Q with flux from a friend of mine who just recently sold his R53 and bought an R56 and have a question to those who know. My friend had all most the same mods (CAI,exhaust,Hot wires and pulley) with the exception of the size of his pulley. He ran a 16 % M7 where as I have a 17 % pulley. Does anyone know if it will suffer (in performance) without getting the Unichip remapped with the difference in pulley size ? I'd love to hear from any Dealers that deal with Unichips or anyone that has had done the same thing.
